Why Pokemon TCG Pocket Mega Evolutions Are Stirring Controversy Among Players

The Pokémon Company revealed that the next expansion for Pokémon TCG Pocket features Mega Evolution cards, and it’s causing some controversy in the community. The Mega Evolution set is poised to kick off the app’s second year. It looks to piggyback off both the upcoming Pokémon TCG expansion and the release of the franchise’s latest game, Pokémon Legends ZA. Unfortunately, it also threatens to impact Pokémon TCG Pocket’s meta negatively.
Why Are Pokémon TCG Pocket Players Anxious About Mega Evolution?
In the trailer for Pokémon TCG Pocket: Mega Evolution, we’re given a sneak peek at three cards that’ll be released in the expansion:
- Mega Alteria ex
- Mega Blaziken ex
- Mega Gyarados ex
All three cards predictably feature more HP and more powerful attacks than a typical ex Pokémon. However, the part that’s causing some mixed opinions is the text in the lower right corner of the card:
“Mega Evolution ex rule: When your Mega Evolved Pokémon ex is Knocked Out, your opponent gets 3 points.”
The rule mirrors the one found on cards in the main Pokémon TCG game. However, in that game, players get six prizes, and in Pocket, they only have three. So, if your Mega Evolution gets knocked out in Pocket, it’s an instant loss.
Players are concerned that the entire competitive meta of Pokémon TCG Pocket will revolve around Mega Evolutions when the new set releases. Those who invested time into collecting and flairing their favorite cards are afraid they’ll become essentially worthless.
It’s expected that the meta will change in both Pokémon TCG and Pocket when a new set arrives. However, with the physical card game, The Pokémon Company has balanced power creep pretty well. We still don’t have a release date for the expansion, and there may be unknown aspects of the update that’ll address the issues fans have.
