The Pokémon TCG’s fifth Mega Evolution era expansion, Pitch Black, arrives worldwide on July 17, 2026, and it is the first main set to pull directly from the Mega Dimension DLC of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

TPCi’s own framing sets the tone. A lit-up cityscape gets smothered by an advancing shadow – Mega Darkrai ex glides in at the center of it and Mega Zeraora ex answers back with lightning.

Where Chaos Rising was open conflict in the streets of Lumiose, Pitch Black is the creepier follow up, a darkness that settles over everything underneath it.

Darkrai has carried the Pitch Black Pokémon classification since Diamond & Pearl, and TPCi built an entire expansion around the epithet.

Pitch Black is a near 1:1 adaptation of Japan’s Abyss Eye, which landed on May 22, 2026, with three additions lifted from Japanese Gym promo sets, like Mega Delphox ex (8), Mega Slowbro ex (31), and Jett (79).

The English list also cuts Zarude’s Illustration Rare and repurposes that artwork as the Elite Trainer Box promo.

Pitch Black Set Details

Six Megas

Pitch Black carries six Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, including Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Delphox ex, Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Slowbro ex, Mega Chandelure ex, and Mega Excadrill ex.

Four more Pokémon ex round out the Double Rare tier in Lurantis ex, Wailord ex, Rampardos ex, and Morpeko ex.

Wailord ex is the curiosity of that group, arriving with 380 HP, which ties it with Mega Venusaur ex and Mega Emboar ex for the highest base HP on any tournament legal card in the game. It also has the highest base HP of any Stage 1 Pokémon ever printed.

Mega Darkrai ex is a Darkness type Basic Mega Evolution Pokémon ex with 280 HP, and it attacks on two axes. Dusk Raid costs two Darkness Energy for 110 damage and does 110 more if your Benched Pokémon have any damage counters on them.

Abyss Eye costs three Darkness Energy and skips damage entirely. If your opponent’s Active Pokémon is affected by a Special Condition, it is Knocked Out.

As with every Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, the tradeoff is on the back end, and your opponent takes three Prize cards when it goes down.

Dark Bell is the Item that makes that second attack sing. It Confuses both Active Pokémon, yours and your opponent’s, with Darkness Pokémon exempt, which is a very pointed piece of design in a Darkrai set.

Two Special Energy close out the base list in Shadowy Energy and Voltaic Energy, and the Fossil package gets a full rework through Antique Armor Fossil and Antique Skull Fossil feeding Shieldon and Cranidos, with Fossil Quarry as the supporting Stadium.

The Trainer Lineup

The character cards are where the Z-A connective tissue shows. Gwynn is the assistant of the Fist of Justice and a Ghost type specialist, and her partner Chandelure Mega Evolves in-game, which makes Mega Chandelure ex a nice bit of internal storytelling.

Jett of Quasartico Inc. joins her, as does a Rust Syndicate Grunt representing Lumiose’s shadiest outfit.

Misty’s Vitality brings Gen 1 nostalgia into the mix, and Gladion’s Final Battle arrives alongside Type: Null and Silvally for the Alola faithful.

Backtrack Badge and Tremendous Bomb fill out the Tool slots.

Chase Cards

The secret rare run spans 85 through 120 and totals 36 cards. Eleven Illustration Rares open the run from 85 to 95, with Goldeen, Slowbro, Dhelmise, and Silvally among the standouts.

Eighteen Ultra Rares follow from 096 to 113, mixing full art Pokémon ex with full art Trainer treatments for Brave Bangle, Crushing Hammer, Dark Bell, Energy Switch, Iron Defender, Tremendous Bomb, and four Supporters in Gladion’s Final Battle, Gwynn, Misty’s Vitality, and Rust Syndicate Grunt.

Six Special Illustration Rares sit at 114 through 119, which include Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Chandelure ex, Mega Darkrai ex, Morpeko ex, Gladion’s Final Battle, and Gwynn.

The Mega Darkrai ex SIR at 116 is the anchor of the set, illustrated by AKIRA EGAWA in a cosmic horror register that looks nothing like the rest of the era.

The regular, Ultra Rare, and Mega Hyper Rare prints of the card are 5ban Graphics work, which makes Egawa’s SIR the outlier and the prize.

Capping the list is the gold etched Mega Darkrai ex Mega Hyper Rare at 120, the single hardest pull in the expansion.

Promos are worth tracking separately. Prerelease Build & Battle Boxes carried Miraidon, Slowbro, Dhelmise, and Bastiodon as ME Series Black Star Promos.

Three retailer promos, Primarina, Zarude, and Armarouge, carry the 30th Celebration What’s Your Favorite stamp and are gift with purchase at $15 or more on Pokémon TCG product, with Primarina at Hot Topic, Barnes & Noble, and BoxLunch, Zarude at GameStop, and Armarouge at Best Buy.
