Panini turns back clock to 1981 next week

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Are you ready to turn back the clock again? If so, Panini America is ready for you next week.

That’s when 1981 arrives all over again.

How? The 2015 Donruss baseball set includes a 50-card subset of 1981 Donruss-styled cards within its distinctly modern wrappers.

The printing quality of yesteryear probably won’t be present as the past release was error-riddled and the production control and materials used have¬†come a long way since then — but the spirit of yesteryear resides within the offerings here that arrive on Wednesday. (No word from Panini on whether any intentional variations will be found.)

The set will include a mix of past and present players — some that other companies can’t use right now like Pete Rose and Ichiro Suzuki — found in the boxes of 2015 Donruss that will include three hits per hobby box. (Click here for our First Look story.)

To me, they just look like a bad knock-off, kind of like Upper Deck Vintage from the early 2000s

Agreed. Nothing makes me more nostalgic than ’87 Donruss and early ’90’s Topps sets.

Baseball isn’t a sport where athletes should only be called by just there first name. It’s annoying when I see it with Ichiro on his baseball cards (especially when everyone knows his last name).
