The flip side to being a competitive TCG player is having value in the cards purchased. Because the cards are made to be played, condition sensitivity has long been an issue for various TCG releases over the decades. However, manufacturers have offered a proverbial loophole in the process, producing non-foil or base variants for some of the games’ most sought-after beautifully designed foil cards without losing the ability to dominate in tournaments.

The two-pronged approach allows tabletop warriors the ability to battle at will without worrying about wear and tear while letting the value-conscious collectors sleeve and grade their top rips.

Those lucky enough to land The Time of Battle “case hit” chases are being rewarded when submitting.

Bandai’s 16th One Piece Card Game release just turned a fresh one month old on July 12. Although a truly short time span in the life of cards, enthusiasts have submitted their cards by the thousands, producing a reliable baseline for understanding Gem Rate percentages. Those who bought in on the OP-16 release are seeing fantastic high grades on their newly slabbed investments.

The 10 The Time of Battle cards that have earned the most Gem Rates to date were analyzed along with their percentages, producing an amazing value-packed list.

Submissions from the top four grading companies, Beckett (BGS), CGC, PSA, and SGC, were compiled for the results.

CGC, PSA, and SGC define a Gem Mint as a 10, while BGS gives that designation for 9.5s. BGS and CGC have a Pristine grade, a 10 for Beckett and essentially a “perfect” card for CGC. BGS also utilizes the vaunted Black Label designation for their grades on flawless examples.

Some of the data shared on various cards in this article may only include two grading companies, as determined by what is made public.

A note for collectors. Different companies will have different labels for the same cards. As an example, Ms. All Sunday is sometimes labeled as MS All Sunday. The card numbers can vary on listings as well. Sticking with Ms. All Sunday, her cards from OP-16 might be represented as #084, #84, #OP14-084, or #OP14084.

To convolute things even more, Ms. All Sunday has the same card numbers in The Azure Sea’s Seven and The Time of Battle releases: #OP14-084.

What changes?

The signature cowboy hat, smile, and jet-black hair remain the same, but the artwork and poses mark the different releases visually for collectors.

Gem Rate Notes: Inside the Details

The demand for Nico Robin, a.k.a. Ms. All Sunday, is undeniable. Across the grading companies, BGS has graded the vast majority of the 209 cards, rewarding 64 Gem Mints, 98 Pristine, and 9 Black Label cards; a total of 171 premium grades.

The Gem Rate drop-off on the Japanese example of Ms. All Sunday is notable. Could this be a handling issue from overseas shipments to the U.S.? A rate of 83.8 percent is still fantastic, although last on this list and a seemingly dramatic fallout from 98.6 percent for the English versions.

The most recent Gem Mint sale of Ms. All Sunday English was on July 8 during a PSA auction on eBay. The card was realized for $1,725.

The highest reported raw example sold on eBay was $850 via a U.S. seller on June 7.

As collectors often get upset about the discrepancies between grading companies, the following information shows amazing alignment between BGS and PSA. The 96.7 percent Gem Rate on the #OP16-065 Sakazuki SR – Beckett is at 96.8 and PSA comes in at 96.6 percent. Additionally, BGS has awarded seven Pristine copies.

With multiple language variants on the list, collectors have another look at the Gem Rate differences between English and Japanese example Borsalino #073 Manga Alt Art. Overall, more of the Japanese versions have earned Gem Mint status over its English counterpart (137-87) but the Gem Rate percentages heavily favor the English examples (96.6-84.7).

BGS has awarded 34 of the 84 Borsalino #073 Manga Alt Art Gem Mints, with PSA grading 21. Beckett has also awarded 29 Pristine examples.

A raw version of the Japanese Borsalino in Australia was reportedly sold on June 13 via eBay for $2,430.87; that same sale has also been reported at $2,801.60. Perhaps better reflecting the current market for a raw example, on July 15 a buyer added an English copy to their PC for $1,299.99.

There is nothing quite like seeing TCG hero Monkey D. Luffy flying through the air in mid-hand-to-hand combat. There is also nothing quite like seeing a Gem Mint example of the Event Winner copy.

The highest reported sale to date of the Monkey D. Luffy Event Winner in Gem Mint condition was recorded on July 10 during a PSA eBay auction. A buyer scooped up the prized card for $1,913.

The strikingly similar artwork between Kuzan, Sakazuki, and Borsalino have not diminished market values. The Kuzan English variant sold for a reported whopping $1,400 on July 6 via eBay. The next highest reported sale on eBay for the Manga Alt Art treatment was $1,249 on June 27.

Not on the value level of its peers, Zehahahahaha! #116 Alt Art is still pulling in some good coin. Beckett is the leader in the grading clubhouse, awarding 32 Gem Mints, 33 Pristine 10s, and 6 Black Labels. A July 2 Probstein auction on eBay saw a BGS 10 sell for $820.

With relatively few Gem Mint copies of Monkey D. Luffy #022 Alt Art in circulation, collectors appear to be holding onto their graded examples. As a result, the highest reported sales have all been raw copies. On June 3, one eBay buyer purchased a copy for $239.
