Magic: The Gathering TCG Hot/Cold List for the Week of June 22

Green Goblin, Nemesis

From $1.40 to $12.10

Our biggest mover this week wasn’t even in the box it’s tied to.

Green Goblin, Nemesis, a four mana Legendary Goblin Human Villain from Marvel’s Spider-Man Eternal, has gone from a near bulk rare to a genuine chase upgrade.

It sat around a dollar in late May, briefly touched $30 at the height of the frenzy, and has since settled to a market price near $12, with the cheapest Near Mint copies around $10.

The catalyst was June 10, when the full Doom Prevails Commander precon decklist went public. Doctor Doom, King of Latveria hands your Villains connive, and connive means discarding cards, exactly what this 3/3 flier wants.

Discard a nonland and you drop a +1/+1 counter on a Goblin and when you discard a land you bank a Treasure.

Pair Doom’s repeatable connive with Goblin’s triggers and you’ve got an engine that grows your board and ramps you at once.

With no reprint in sight and supply thin, players upgrading the precon cleaned out listings in a hurry.

Scurry of Squirrels

From $0.35 to $2.68

From a lone Villain to a horde of fuzzy attackers.

Scurry of Squirrels, a Commander: Bloomburrow card from the Squirreled Away precon, is one of the week’s biggest percentage gainers.

You could grab it for about $0.30 in mid-May, and now it’s now sitting near $3.

The spark is The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, previewed for Marvel Super Heroes as a brand-new Squirrel commander.

Those copies are Squirrels, so they briefly swell your Squirrel count. Activate Squirrel Girl mid-combat and she mints that many permanent 1/1 Squirrels before the copies are exiled.

Chatterfang, Squirrel General has kept it relevant for years, but a fresh face for the tribe lit the fuse.

Tempt with Bunnies

From $1.86 to $3.84

Staying in Bloomburrow, Tempt with Bunnies has risen to a market price around $4.

This one’s different from our first two movers, because I can’t point you to a single shiny new commander behind it.

It’s a three mana white Tempting Offer spell, where you draw a card and make a 1/1 Rabbit, then each opponent may do the same, and for everyone who takes the deal, you draw and make another Rabbit, up to four cards and four tokens for three mana in a full pod.

This move looks more like speculation than a specific combo, as if someone bought in on a group hug and Rabbit typal in bulk.

It does have real homes in Ms. Bumbleflower and go wide Rabbit builds, so it’s not a house of cards, but I’d treat this spike with more caution than the other two.

Katara, Waterbending Master

From $12.94 to $9

For our first cool down, we head back to last year’s Avatar crossover.

Katara, Waterbending Master was one of the more talked about Commander cards out of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

It’s a blue spellslinger who banks an experience counter every time you cast a spell on an opponent’s turn, then lets you draw a card for each counter when she attacks (discarding one if you do).

She climbed to around $16 in early May, but the market has cooled into the $9 range.

There’s no reprint hammer here, it’s simpler than that.

Attention has turned to Marvel Super Heroes, and as the next big set soaks up everyone’s wallet, the previous crossover’s chase pieces lose urgency.

She’s still a fine commander, just a cooler buy this week.

Cosmogrand Zenith

From $7.26 to $4.69

Our second cold pick is a quieter slide.

Cosmogrand Zenith, the three mana mythic from Edge of Eternities, pays you off every time you cast your second spell in a turn, either making two 1/1 Soldiers or putting a +1/+1 counter on each of your creatures.

It was a popular pickup for white go wide and token builds, but demand has thinned and the market price has drifted under $5.

Supply is plentiful, and with a marquee Marvel release on the doorstep, dollars are flowing elsewhere.

It’s a cool down rather than a collapse, but there’s no reason to chase this one today.
