Spider-Man Set Details

To help put some of the data into perspective, reported pull odds should be shared along with other key details.

One of the initial criticisms of the set before the release was the size. An announced 100-card checklist was expanded to 188 in hopes of quelling collector disappointment. The rarities included Common (60), Uncommon (55), Rare (53), and Mythic Rare (15).

Quick math – the numbers do not add up to 188.

Some cards, like #10 have an “a” (Peter Parker) and a “b” (Amazing Spider-Man) variant. This also includes #233a Eddie Brock and #233b Venom, Lethal Protector; the population report has lumped the cards together.

Pull rates for Rares have been reported at roughly 83 percent, Mythics at over 11 percent, and Special Variants of Mythics under 1 percent.

The Soul Stone

In the Marvel storyline, there are six Infinity Gems – Mind, Power, Space, Time, Reality, and Soul Stone or Soul Gem for the purists.

Although Spider-Man’s name is on the box, The Soul Stone is the chase card in the set.

Of the different The Soul Stone releases in the set, the Cosmic Foil example is the grail card.

Early reports indicated that there were 150 or fewer Cosmic Foil examples in circulation – that data aligns with the pop report (52).

For collectors, it is encouraging to see that roughly one-third of The Soul Stone Cosmic Foil supply has been submitted for grading – suggesting that there are more out there! Additionally, if a collector submits the found treasure, 90.49 Gem Rate odds is money in the bank.

Digging deeper into the Cosmic Foil data, among the top four grading companies, there are 83 Gem Mints awarded with four Pristine examples from CGC.

Receiving a Mint (9) on a card is a strong result. With that, of the 348 graded examples, 155 have earned a Mint designation.

The base #66 The Soul Stone has earned 200 Gem Mint grades between BGS and PSA, with Beckett awarding 11 Pristine examples. Another positive for hopeful submitters, 225 of the 493 cards have earned Mint grades.

Soul Stone = Money in the Bank

A high-grade example is one thing, but what does that mean on the open market?

On June 8, a PSA Gem Mint #66 The Soul Stone was purchased off eBay for $215.

After a high on eBay of $790 on April 22, the valuation of a Gem Mint #66 The Soul Stone Foil has settled in a range between $499 (June 22) and $599.99 (June 19).

A PSA 10 Borderless #243 The Soul Stone was realized on eBay for $6,500 on May 23.

Demand with an extremely limited supply has spiked value for the #242 The Soul Stone Headliner Cosmic Foil. A collector reportedly bought a raw version via eBay for $11,000 on April 10. Eight days later, the same seller earned $17,500 during an eBay auction for a presumed second example of The Soul Stone Cosmic Foil.

Remember that nugget of information about four Pristine #242 The Soul Stone Cosmic Foil cards being graded by CGC?

Well – one of them was offered up for sale.

On June 21, a buyer on eBay added a TCG grail card to the collection for $60,000.

The Next MTG Grail Chase

Competitive TCG players and collectors got a second look at the MTG-Marvel collaboration on June 26 with Marvel Super Heroes. While The Soul Stone occupied cardboard hunters in the Spider-Man release, The Mind Stone is the grail card from the Super Heroes set.

It is too early in the submission process for a dive into the Gem Rate data to glean any real information, but BGS has already awarded one Gem Mint and one Mint The Mind Stone Textless Cosmic Foil M. As of this writing, neither example has been listed on eBay for sale.
