Magic: The Gathering Lorwyn Eclipsed Previews and the Historic Ban Hammer

Wizards of the Coast released a major update for MTG Arena yesterday. The announcement covers three main topics, the full card image gallery for Lorwyn Eclipsed, the schedule for the upcoming Early Access event, and some significant changes to the Historic format involving new pre-banned cards.
Let’s break down what this means for your collection, your wildcards, and the competitive landscape.
The Return of the King

First, let’s talk about the face cards. We finally have the text for the set’s heavy hitters, and they are mechanically fascinating.
Oko, Lorwyn Liege // Oko, Shadowmoor Scion is officially revealed, and he is a Transforming Double-Faced Card (TDFC).
I know, the name Oko gives us all PTSD from 2019, but this design is clever. For 3 mana, you get a walker that can swap between a Blue control shell and a Green/Blue graveyard engine.
The +2 ability on the front face, “Up to one target creature gains all creature types. (This effect doesn’t end.).” It doesn’t end.
That is a permanent modification to a card. In paper Magic, this is a memory issue waiting to happen, but on Arena, it’s seamless.
From a gameplay perspective, this turns any creature into a valid target for Typal payoffs. Your Gilded Goose is now an Elf, a Giant, and a Kithkin.
Speaking of Kithkin, Ajani, Outland Chaperone is the 3-mana white walker we’ve been waiting for. He creates a 1/1 Kithkin token with his +1, which is the gold standard for a playable planeswalker, he protects himself immediately.
If you are holding onto stacks of old Cloudgoat Rangers or Knight of Meadowgrain, it’s time to dig them out. Kithkin White Weenie is back on the menu.
The Historic Pre-Ban

Now, for the educational part of today’s class. Buried in the announcement was a note that Devoted Druid and Painter’s Servant are pre-banned in Historic upon release.
Why does this matter? Because it confirms these legacy-powerhouse cards are coming to the client, likely as part of a Special Guest or bonus sheet in Lorwyn Eclipsed.
And the fact that they are pre-banned tells you exactly how broken they are.
- Painter’s Servant: This little scarecrow turns every card in all zones into a chosen color. On its own, it’s cute. But combined with Grindstone, which mills two cards, and repeats if they share a color, it becomes an instant-kill combo. Since Painter makes everything share a color, Grindstone mills the opponent’s entire library in one activation. If this is legal in Timeless, get your artifact removal ready.
- Devoted Druid: This elf untaps by putting a -1/-1 counter on itself. Historically, you pair this with Vizier of Remedies, which prevents -1/-1 counters from being placed. The result? You can tap and untap the Druid infinite times for Infinite Green Mana.
The arrival of these combos suggests that MTG Arena is inching closer to a true Vintage-Lite experience. If you play Timeless, start saving your wildcards now. These are format-warping engines.
