Magic: The Gathering Hot/Cold List for the Week of November 9, 2025

Welcome back to our weekly look at the movers and shakers in the Magic: The Gathering market.
This week, we’re focusing on the non-stop Secret Lair release schedule and how it is shaping the market.
We’ve just seen the PlayStation drop, the Encyclopedia Kits has been released, and the Avatar Superdrop is next. This surplus of new cards and wallet fatigue is creating a strange market.
The cards hitting our hot List this week prove it. We’ve got two different cards spiking from synergies with new PlayStation commanders, and our cool pick is a perfect example of how reprints really work.
Hot List
Surtr, Fiery Jötun
Here’s our first big mover, and it’s one courtesy of the PlayStation Secret Lair. Surtr, Fiery Jötun, a rare from Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed, has absolutely exploded.
This card was sitting under $1 at the start of October, and it is now past $7.50, heading toward $8. The reason is simple, the two new Playstation cards Kratos, Stoic Father and Atreus, Impulsive Son.
This new father-son partner pairing from the God of War drop has players wanting to build Gods and Legends decks.
Surtr, being a God himself, fits perfectly. He triggers whenever you cast other Gods (which are legendary), pinging your opponents.
Data shows a whopping 70 percent of Kratos/Atreus decks are running him. With no other printings, this niche rare just became a hot commodity.

Fallen Shinobi
Fallen Shinobi, a cool-but-forgettable Ninja from 2019’s Modern Horizons, just got a massive 270 percent price spike. This card has been a $1 rare for years, but it has climbed steadily over the last month to a market price of over $4.50, with some versions peaking at over $7.
The reason is a perfect example of Commander synergy. The PlayStation Secret Lair just dropped, and with it came a brand-new Dimir commander, Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima.
As a Commander brewer, I’m really excited about this combo. Jin Sakai has an ability that can either make an attacking creature effectively unblockable or give it double strike.
If your opponent has blockers, Jin makes Fallen Shinobi unblockable, you hit them, and you get to cast two of their cards for free. If they don’t have blockers, Jin gives the Shinobi double strike, letting it hit twice, and you steal four cards.
This is a legitimate, powerful, and incredibly fun new combo. Players are, rightfully, buying up the key piece for their new decks.

Cold List
Myrel, Shield of Argive
For my cold pick, I want to talk about a different kind of market movement, the cooling effect.
Myrel, Shield of Argive has been a $20-plus staple for Soldier and token decks ever since she was printed in The Brothers’ War. She’s a fantastic card that protects you on your turn and builds a huge army.
So why is she on the cold list? Because the Secret Lair Countdown Kit: An Encyclopedia of Magic just started shipping on November 3. And what’s the “M” card in that 26-card, $200 box? You guessed it, Myrel.
The original card’s price hasn’t crashed… yet. It’s holding stable at around $19. But this reprint puts a hard ceiling on its value.
Players who want one now has another, a newer option. I’ve even seen folks online saying, “I was about to buy one, but now I’ll wait.”
That hesitation is the cooling effect in action. Demand for the original version softens as this new supply trickles into the market. It’s still a great card, but it’s a cold investment right now.
