I just finished watching episode one of Loki, “Glorious Purpose” on Disney+. Let me begin by saying that I thought it was fantastic. While the rest of the world catches up, I thought I would point out a few Easter Eggs I caught in the first episode. Now, with fair warning, there will be spoilers ahead, so if you aren’t into those, please watch the episode first. Otherwise, let’s get started.

The Devil is a Lie

I’m going to jump around here as I lay out these comic book connections in “Glorious Purpose”. First up, was that Mephisto? Well, no it wasn’t, at least according to Mobius. With that being said, that figure in the stained glass looked a lot like Mephisto. With all the hype around the character from WandaVision that didn’t materialize fans are grasping at strings hoping that it is. Sadly, it’s just a coincidence that the not-so-subtle reference in the stained glass is, in fact, Loki. Said fact was also confirmed by director, Kate Herron. However, since fans won’t let this Mephisto theory die, you can find his first appearance in Silver Surfer #3.

Speaking of Mobius

First, Owen Wilson was perfectly cast as Mobius. I did not realize how much I had missed seeing Owen on screen until this morning. Loki appears to have met his match with the TVA, more specifically, Mobius. Keep in mind this is not the Loki that matured in the films, at least not yet. This 2012 Loki is in his evil prime. All of that comes crashing to a halt though when Mobius gets him in an interrogation room. Two things become clear there. First, Mobius’s loves for Josta, a perfect ’90s reference by the way. Second, Loki cannot out whit him as he has all the answers. Comic book readers will find the first appearance of Mobius in Fantastic Four #353.

Hope You Sleep Well

There was more than one reference to Nightmare in the first episode of Loki. First, a possible rendition of the Doctor Strange villain on the bubble gum packaging, in the church, and again later when Loki and Mobius are walking the halls of the TVA. It’s strongly assumed that Nightmare will make his MCU debut in The Multiverse of Madness, and the perfect connection here is Michael Waldron who wrote both titles. Then again it could just be dry humor from Mobius, but probably not. Readers looking for the first appearance of Nightmare will find it in Strange Tales #110.

Dude Look Like A Lady

The final entry on our Loki “Glorious Purpose” Easter Eggs is that TVA file that reads “fluid” next to Loki’s sex. This is in reference to all those years that Loki was up to no good on Midgard disguised as a woman. Since this is in canon, we may be able to assume that a female Loki will show up in the series. As, for now, you can find the first appearance of Lady Loki in Thor #2. Now, there is a lot more to this story so this may not be the last time Lady Loki comes up, but for now, this little tidbit of information will have to do.
