They’ve been built, will you come looking for them?

Leaf Trading Cards revealed on Wednesday its newest creations — baseball cards with cornstalks from the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa.

They will be found in holiday bonus packs given to distributors.

There will be 14 cards showing former baseball players and two celebrities. Most of them played in a Team of Dreams game in September at the baseball field built and used in the Kevin Costner movie Field of Dreams.

“This was just another way for us to have fun and come up with something nobody has else has ever done in the hobby,” said Leaf CEO Brian Gray, who also was among the players for the game.

Actor Matthew Perry and singer Randy Owen appear on cards along with Johnny Bench, Wade Boggs, Rod Carew, Carlton Fisk, Doc Gooden, Rickey Henderson, Reggie Jackson, Paul Molitor, Jim Palmer, Jim Rice, Pete Rose, Ozzie Smith, Bruce Sutter and Frank Thomas.

Event used corn. That’s a good one. I think I may like to see this concept with the lineup of baseball players that returned in Field of Dreams, Shoeless Joe, Smokey Joe Wood, Mel Ott, Gil Hodges, but not Ty Cobb! “Ty Cobb wanted to play, but none of us could stand the son-of-a-bitch when we were alive, so we told him to stick it!”

I vote “Cool,” but it would be even cooler if the players and actors featured in the movie were on the cards.

Awesome place to visit, recommend for any baseball/movie fan. Corn concept is awesome….no logo’s or team names….not so awesome.

You can’t hate on this. It’s not like they’re trying to “sell” these. I don’t see much of a future for corn cards… but it’s a fun giveaway and good conversation piece.

corny, but for free you can’t complain. I still don’t get why these companies with no licenses even bother. The no logo stuff is hideous.

Do I dare comment, Chris, on the two card samples you provided??? Reggie and Jim Rice are two of the most classless athletes that I encountered while working for them when their teams came to Cleveland Stadium.
Seeing these two samples automatically turns me off on this product!

Aw “Shucks” why didn’t I think of that idea for a card. C’mon no one thought of the shucks pun before me???
What’s next cob knob cards? Pretty ingenious idea Panini.

Sorry I meant to say LEAF, I don’t know where Panini came from. I was thinking of the no logos I guess.

Great idea! Richard McWilliam would have done one of himself. I wonder if Brian Gray will?

This should be filed under “could be cool”. Since they can’t use logos, it seems like a natural fit to include only players featured in the movie (especially since most of them didn’t have logos on their hats anyway). It especially makes sense since they are not affiliated with MLB, and can include the banned players. Either way, it’s a give away, so it’s still getting a cool vote from me.

I disagree about the logo stuff. Maybe if Panini and Leaf keep coming up with innovative stuff, it will either force Topps to improve or nudge MLB into making reasonable deals with all the manufacturers.

By the way, is anybody else not able to access the forums? I haven’t been able to get in in three days, I keep getting a maintenance message (???)
