Jayson Tatum Rookie Card Rankings
At first, it seemed kind of strange that the Celtics would trade away the first overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Things have worked out just fine on both the court for Boston and in the hobby. Part of a deep first-year class, the growing Jayson Tatum Rookie Card list has no shortage of coveted options.
Curious about what Jayson Tatum cards are out there? We’ve highlighted his Rookie Cards and ranked them according to their value.
Most Valuable Jayson Tatum Rookie Card Rankings
This list includes cards with the RC tag in the Beckett Basketball Database and Price Guide. Ranks are determined by book value. Inserts and parallels are not taken into account on this list, just base cards.
More cards will be added throughout the year as new sets are released.
17. 2017-18 Donruss Jayson Tatum RC #198
Donruss might not have a long history in basketball like it does in baseball, but that blue Rated Rookie logo is still likely to conjure up some nostalgia for a lot of collectors. 2017-18 Donruss Basketball doesn’t try to be something high-end. Rather, its themes look to the past while a lot of the designs (particularly many of the parallel patterns) opt for something more modern.
Parallels: Green Flood, Holo Laser Green and Yellow, Holo Laser Orange, Press Proof Silver (/299), Press Proof Purple (/199), Holo Laser Green (/99), Holo Laser Red (/99), Press Proof Red (/75), Holo Laser Blue (/49), Holo Laser Yellow (/25), Press Proof Blue (/25), Holo Laser Purple (/15), Holo Laser Red and Blue (/15), Press Proof Gold (/10), Press Proof Black (1/1)
16. 2017-18 Panini Chronicles Jayson Tatum RC #137
The big draw for 2017-18 Panini Chronicles is the inclusion of several brands not getting their own release this season. That said, Chronicles does have a main set and it’s somewhat overlooked. The angle the cards take, like Tatum’s Rookie, is something of a newspaper approach with a headline to go with a small accomplishment story.
Parallels: Red (/299), Blue (/199), Purple (/149), Pink (/99), Gold (/10), Holo Gold (1/1)
15. 2017-18 Hoops Jayson Tatum RC #253
2017-18 Hoops has the first mainstream Jayson Tatum Rookie Card of him in a Boston Celtics uniform. Another entry-level release, the base set is largely no-frills in its approach. As far as basketball cards go, it’s widely available and targets a broad collecting base. So it might not carry a ton of value, but it’s popular in other ways.
Parallels: Blue, Red Backs, Teal Explosion, Premium Box Set (/199), Silver (/199), Teal (/125), Green (/99), Blue Checkerboard (/75), Orange Explosion (/75), Red (/49), Artist Proof (/25), Orange (/25), Red Checkerboard (/15), Gold (/10), Artist Proof Black (1/1)
14. 2017-18 Prestige Jayson Tatum RC #153
2017-18 Prestige offers a Jayson Tatum Rookie Card that’s straightforward in its approach and boasts a full action shot. Parallels are largely based on the types of packs you open, putting a different sort of spin on the chase. Widely available at retail and complimented by a hobby version, tracking a copy down isn’t hard or expensive.
Parallels: Horizon, Mist, Rain, Crystal Cracked Ice (/199), Crystal Gold Cracked Ice (/10), Crystal Blue Cracked Ice (1/1)
13. 2017-18 Status Jayson Tatum RC #128
The debut release of Status Basketball stems out of the Elite line. While there are some similarities — like the use of foil for base cards — the colorful look is definitely different. Not a high-end card, it’s likely to be most appreciated by those looking for something affordable and modern.
Parallels: Aqua, Foundations, Orange, Pursuit Die-Cut, Red (/299), Blue (/199), Purple (/149), Green (/75), Status (/45), Aspirations (/55), Gold (/10), Kaleido (1/1)
12. 2017-18 Revolution Jayson Tatum RC #121
2017-18 Revolution Basketball is a bit of a modern throwback. Going back about 20 years to the brand’s early days, then with Pacific, it’s about patterned foil backgrounds. And that’s done with additional foil accents. It’s busy, it’s bright and it might not be for everyone. But there are a segment of collectors, particularly on the basketball side, that love the different approach.
Parallels: Astro, Chinese New Year, Fractal, Galactic, Groove, Impact, Cosmic (/100), Sunburst (/75), Cubic (/50), Lava (/1)
11. 2017-18 Donruss Optic Jayson Tatum RC #198
The 2017-18 Donruss Optic Jayson Tatum Rookie Card puts a chromium spin on his regular Donruss card. So while it’s a little more premium to touch, it’s the shine that’s the big draw. And, like Prizm and Select, there’s a sizeable parallel rainbow to go with it, mixing both colors and background patterns.
Parallels: Blue Velocity, Checkerboard, Fast Break Holo, Holo, Purple, White Sparkle, Premium (/249), Orange (/199), Fast Break Orange (/193), Lime Green (/175), Fast Break Purple (/155), Red (/99), Fast Break Red (/85), Pink Velocity (/79), Fast Break Blue (/50), Blue (/49), Black Velocity (/39), Aqua (/25), Pink (25), Fast Break Pink (/20), Purple Stars (/13), Fast Break Gold (/10), Gold (/10), Green (/5), Black (1/1), Fast Break Black (1/1), Gold Vinyl (1/1)
10. 2017-18 Select Jayson Tatum RC #93
2017-18 Select is one of a handful of chrome-styled sets released over the course of the season. One of the ways it sets itself apart is through a tiered base set. So while Tatum has three different cards, it’s this one that’s the most common and, therefore, the RC.
Parallels: Prizms Scope, Prizms Silver, Prizms Tri-Color, Prizms Zebra, Prizms Blue (/299), Prizms Maroon (/199), Prizms White (/149), Prizms Orange (/75), Prizms Tie-Dye (/25), Prizms Gold (/10), Prizms Neon Orange Pulsar (/9), Prizms Green (/5), Prizms Black (1/1)
9. 2017-18 Court Kings Jayson Tatum RC #121
2017-18 Court Kings has one of the busiest looks of any Jayson Tatum Rookie Card. Going to back to the early days of baseball’s Diamond Kings, art is the theme. And that’s readily apparent with the background. Tatum actually has four different cards in the base set. The other three are short prints that have different photos and entirely different designs. It’s a tiered approach with the final one being especially tough. Because card #121 is the most common, it’s considered to be the RC.
8. 2017-18 Panini Ascension Jayson Tatum RC #130
2017-18 Panini Ascension has a pair of Jayson Tatum Rookie Cards. All 40 rookies in the set, a new addition to Panini’s portfolio, have two different cards. Both have the same number and are available in equal numbers. As a result, both get the RC tag. As for the card itself, it’s full of color, but in a subtle way. Ascension is in that middle-ground where it’s not an entry-level release but it’s not exactly high-end either.
Parallels: Blue (/129), Red (/75), Purple (/50), Green (/25), Black (1/1)
7. 2017-18 Totally Certified Jayson Tatum RC #103 /299
Etched foil rules on the 2017-18 Totally Certified Jayson Tatum Rookie Card. As far as designs go, this has to be one of the most modern looking of the bunch. The lines, colors and textures are somewhat reminiscent of a pair of sneakers in an abstract way. This card does have the distinction of being the first serial-numbered Jayson Tatum RC. At 299 copies, it’s not scarce but as time goes by, it could get fairly tough to track down.
Parallels: Purple (/199), Blue (/99), Camo (/25), Gold (/10), Green (/5), Holo Blue (1/1)
6. 2017-18 Panini Prizm Jayson Tatum RC #16
2017-18 Panini Prizm Basketball is one of the hottest releases of the year. While the Prizms parallels are leading the charge, the Rookie Cards like this one, are hanging tough as well. For a product that’s available at both the hobby and retail levels, this card is still fetching some premium numbers and proving the staying power of chromium. It helps that Prizm has been around for a few years now and established itself as one of the cornerstone basketball releases.
Parallels: Fast Break, Green, Hyper, Red/White/Blue, Ruby Wave, Silver, White Sparkle, Blue (/199), Fast Break Blue (/175), Fast Break Red (/125), Blue Ice (/99), Fast Break Purple (/75), Purple (/75), Fast Break Pink (/50), Orange (/49), Pink Pulsar (/42), Green Pulsar (/25), Mojo (/25), Red Pulsar (/25), Fast Break Bronze (/20), Gold (/10), Red Shimmer (/8), Fast Break Neon Green (/5), Black (1/1), Fast Break Black (1/1)
5. 2017-18 Panini Mosaic Prizm Jayson Tatum RC #20
The 2017-18 Panini Mosaic Prizm Jayson Tatum Rookie Card has a few things going for it. First, there’s the look. The added background gives it plenty of flash. Like other Prizm sets, there’s some color with the parallels but not a ton. Beyond the product’s physical attributes, Mosaic Prizm was Panini’s first full release done as an online exclusive. That cut down on availability somewhat. It also meant a relatively small print run, making the card a rarer than other similar Tatum cards.
Parallels: Blue, Green, Orange, Red, Purple (/99), Camo (/25), Gold (/10), Black (1/1)
4. 2017-18 Absolute Memorabilia Jayson Tatum RC #68
Unless you buy it professionally graded, you’re likely to find the 2017-18 Absolute Memorabilia Jayson Tatum Rookie Card in a sealed magnetic holder. That’s because Panini opted for an uncirculated approach to the product’s base cards. Although not numbered, they’re not likely to have a massive print run. Absolute Memorabilia isn’t a cheap product to start with and there are only a pair of base cards (or scarce Maroon parallels) in each master box.
Parallels: Maroon (/7)
3. 2017-18 Panini Contenders Draft Picks Jayson Tatum RC #54 Autograph
2017-18 Panini Contenders Draft Picks takes its name to heart, taking a largely college approach. Vets are in their NBA uniforms for the base set, but this set isn’t really about them. It’s the first packed out basketball product with the year’s rookie crop. In Contenders tradition, the Jayson Tatum Rookie Card is a Rookie Ticket Autograph — and on-card to boot. Obviously, that adds a lot of value.
In addition to the main card, there are three different variations with different photos plus several parallels.
Parallels: Blue Foil, Red Foil, Draft Ticket (/99), Cracked Ice (/23), Playoff Ticket (/15), Championship Ticket (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)
2. 2017-18 Panini Contenders Jayson Tatum RC Autograph #103 /125
Contenders is one of the cornerstone lines in the Panini portfolio. While it’s biggest in football, the Rookie Ticket Autograph popularity transfers to other sports. Jayson Tatum’s RC in 2017-18 Contenders comes with an on-card autograph, but it’s numbered to 125 copies. Also of note, among the parallels are Premium Edition versions done on chromium stock, a first for the line in basketball.
Parallels: Premium Edition, Playoff Ticket (/65), The Finals Ticket (/25), Cracked Ice Ticket (/20), Premium Edition Gold (/20), Championship Ticket (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)
1. 2017-18 Panini National Treasures Jayson Tatum RC Auto Patch #103 /99
2017-18 Panini National Treasures is the grand-daddy of all Jayson Tatum Rookie Cards. Since Panini landed the NBA exclusive, the line has become synonymous with valuable Rookies. But it doesn’t just rely on history. The card’s construction backs it up with an on-card autograph, huge patch piece and a low print run of 99 copies. Basically, it’s the complete package as far as a super-premium card goes.
Parallels: Horizontal (/49), Horizontal Bronze (/25), 1st Off the Line Limited Edition (/15), Gold (/10), Emerald (/5), Logoman (1/1)
