Is a Pokémon Pitch Black Booster Box Worth Opening? Here’s the Math

Mega Evolution Pitch Black lands July 17, Mega Darkrai ex is staring out from the front of the box, and odds are you already have a preorder sitting in a cart somewhere.
Before you pull the trigger, one question deserves a straight answer. If you buy a booster box and rip it, do you come out ahead?
Not whether it’s fun. Not whether you’ll hit something. Whether the cards that fall out of 36 packs are worth more than the box cost you.
I ran the math for you and here is what I found.
Pokémon Pitch Black Booster Box Value
Start With the Sticker Price
A Pitch Black booster box carries a distributor MSRP of $161.64 for 36 packs. That’s $4.49 a pack, and the price this product was built to sell at.
It is not the price you’re paying. Presale boxes have been changing hands between $202 and $247 over the past few days, settling around $223. On TCGplayer, they’ve closed between $250 and $272.
So you’re handing over $61 to $111 more than the sticker. Everything below is a fight against that gap.

What’s Actually Inside
The Pokémon Company doesn’t publish pull rates, so what follows is reported data from sampling of earlier Mega Evolution sets. There’s no Pitch Black specific sample yet.
An average box gives you about seven Double Rares, four Illustration Rares, and three Ultra Rares. The gold Mega Darkrai ex is reported to land around 1 in 1,786 packs.
Two boxes out of three contain no Special Illustration Rare at all. The Mega Darkrai ex SIR shows up in about one box in 16. The gold turns up in one box in 50.
The odds are very much not in your favor, but an expression I always love to say is statistics don’t matter when it comes to the individual.

The Number That Looks Great and Isn’t
The six Special Illustration Rares average around $185, from Mega Darkrai ex at $400 to $440 down to Gladion’s Final Battle near $65. Illustration Rares average about $20, Ultra Rares about $19, and Double Rares can be purchased for under $5.
Weigh each tier by its reported pull rate and the average box coughs up about $265 in hits. Against a $223 box, that looks like a $42 win.
Then you try to sell them. Commission and payment processing eat roughly a dollar in eight, and your $265 becomes $231. Your edge is now eight bucks, in the best case, the one where English prices never move at all.
For scale, there are some trackers out there quoting a Pitch Black box at north of $3,300 and pegging a single pack at $92. Same prices, same reported rates, the honest per pack figure is about $7.40. Somebody’s math went for a walk.

Buy the Card, Not the Raffle Ticket
If the top end gives back a quarter and everything else softens, a box nets about $188. A steeper slide puts it at $161. Japan parity drops it to $139, and at that point even an MSRP box loses money.
There’s no price in today’s market where ripping this box is a good financial bet. But there are cards here worth owning, and each of them is cheaper bought outright.

Mega Darkrai ex 116/84 – Special Illustration Rare
The set’s reason to exist. Wait a few weeks and let the launch spike bleed out the way it did in Japan.

Mega Darkrai ex 48/84 – Double Rare
The one you actually sleeve and play. Around $10. Same Pokémon, same Abyss Eye attack, a fortieth of the price.

Misty’s Vitality 111/84 – Ultra Rare
Near $62, roughly double the next Ultra Rare in the set and within three dollars of an actual Special Illustration Rare. The oddest price tag in Pitch Black.

Slowbro 90/84 – Illustration Rare
Dozing under a streetlamp, and the runaway binder favorite of the set at roughly $29.
