Insert Card Craze: Fleer Rookie Sensations
In the days before serial numbers, relic cards, certified autographs and countless parallels, simple base insert cards ruled the hobby.
The first modern insert cards arrived on the market in the late 1980s, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s that the insert card craze truly swept the hobby, aided in part by rising young superstars Ken Griffey Jr. and Frank Thomas.
In the coming weeks, we will be taking a look back at some of the more memorable insert sets from that era and their progression over the years.

We turn our attention this week to an insert set that was first launched as part of an otherwise forgettable 1992 Fleer Baseball release. The popularity of Frank Thomas and Jeff Bagwell helped drive the initial Fleer Rookie Sensations set’s popularity. The Thomas card specifically played a major role in launching the insert card craze of the ’90s.
1992 Fleer Rookie Sensations
Cards: 20
Hall of Famers: 3
The inaugural Rookie Sensations cards were found only in 35-card jumbo packs of 1992 Fleer Baseball with 1:4 pack odds. Once the inserts took off in popularity, the jumbo packs started selling for significantly more than retail on the secondary market.
While Frank Thomas was undeniably the chase card in the set, the 20-card checklist also features fellow Hall of Famers Jeff Bagwell and Ivan Rodriguez. The Thomas card still carries a $20 book value and stands as one of the iconic inserts of the 1990s.

1993 Fleer Rookie Sensations
Cards: 20
Hall of Famers: 0
The 1993 Rookie Sensations inserts were once again found only in jumbo packs, with two separate 10-card checklists found in the Series 1 and Series 2 releases.
Speedster Kenny Lofton and 1992 NL Rookie of the Year Eric Karros are the highlights of the Series 1 group, while outfielder Moises Alou and knuckleballer Tim Wakefield are the biggest names from the Series 2 list.

1994 Fleer Rookie Sensations
Cards: 20
Hall of Famers: 1
The Rookie Sensations were once again found exclusively in jumbo packs in 1994, and they were also found at a 1:4 pack insertion rate, despite the fact that the pack size was trimmed to 21 cards.
It’s a busy design with two photos and a large team mascot name on the front, but it fits the 1990s vibe. Catcher Mike Piazza is the lone Hall of Famer on a checklist that also includes Tim Salmon and Jeff Conine.

1995 Fleer Rookie Sensations
Cards: 20
Hall of Famers: 0
Another year, another jumbo pack-only distribution of the Rookie Sensations inserts, though this time around they were a tougher pull at 1:12 packs.
The design was more subdued than the previous year’s, which is a bit surprising when you consider the bold design of the 1995 Fleer base set. The top names on the 20-card checklist were Manny Ramirez, Javy Lopez, Ryan Klesko and Raul Mondesi.

1996 Fleer Rookie Sensations
Cards: 15
Hall of Famers: 1
For the first time in 1996, the Rookie Sensations inserts were available in retail and hobby products with a pull rate of 1:11 packs. The change came as a result of jumbo packs no longer being produced.
The cards also featured a landscaped design for the first time, with a large holo foil nameplate on one side and a player photo on the other. Chipper Jones is the big name in the set, along with Hideo Nomo, Andy Pettitte and Johnny Damon.

1997 Fleer Rookie Sensations
Cards: 20
Hall of Famers: 1
The Rookie Sensations inserts were exclusive to Series 1 for the 1997 Fleer release, and they were an easier pull than the previous year at a 1:6 pack insertion rate.
The multi-colored, paint-brushed design was a dramatic change from the previous year’s more straight-forward, foil-based presentation. Derek Jeter is the headliner of a strong checklist that also includes Bobby Abreu, Jermaine Dye, Darin Erstad, Nomar Garciaparra, Andruw Jones, Jason Kendall, Edgar Renteria and Scott Rolen

1998 Fleer Tradition Rookie Sensations
Cards: 20
Hall of Famers: 1
The Fleer flagship brand was presented as “Fleer Tradition” for the first time in 1998, and the long-running Rookie Sensations inserts made the switch as well. The inserts were once again exclusive to Series 1 packs at a 1:18 pack pull rate.
Garciaparra, Jones and Rolen were included for a second consecutive year, and they were joined by Vladimir Guerrero, Todd Helton and Magglio Ordonez.
The Rookie Sensations inserts were disbanded starting in 1999, though they did reappear in 2002 (serial numbered to 1,500) and 2007 (one-per wax pack) Fleer products.

What does one do with 2 shoe boxes of sports cards, but very limited knowledge of sports?
Give them away too whoever answers your question..lol… Actually, most people just donate to charity or give them away at Halloween. It seemed that most cards produced between 1986 and about 2006 are worthless anyway due to overproduction.
