Pokemon TCG Beginners Guide

It can be intimidating to get started with Pokémon TCG in 2026. As soon as stock hits the shelves, people pounce on it, leaving many new players empty-handed. If you’ve never played before, seeing cards fresh out of the pack going for hundreds or thousands of dollars might make you think there’s no place to start if you’re not trying to spend big bucks. Fortunately, there are still a few easy and affordable ways to get into Pokémon TCG.

What’s the best way to get into Pokémon TCG in 2026?

Pokemon TCG Battle Deck

There are a few products targeted at new Pokémon TCG players that scalpers, speculators, and veterans don’t bother with. Battle Decks are the easiest to find and consist of a single 60-card pre-constructed deck. Because these are pre-constructed, the individual cards have little value, and you can typically find an assortment at MSRP. One thing to note when buying a Battle Deck is that you should choose a fairly recent one so that you can use the cards in Standard format matches.

Once you play some matches with a Battle Deck and decide Pokémon TCG is for you, then you should move on to purchasing singles. Of course, opening packs is part of the excitement of Pokémon TCG, but it’s much more cost-effective to purchase single cards. If you want to keep your early investment to a minimum, this is the way to go.

One of the best ways to start is to keep it as simple as possible: choose a deck list from a recent tournament or a good beginner deck list, and only purchase the cards you’ll need. This provides an easy way to understand the rules of the game and the most popular card strategies, and to upgrade your deck over time without spending money on unnecessary pulls. Additionally, local card shops are also beneficial to new players, as they often hold casual tournaments or open-house type events.
