Gundam Card Game Rarities Explained

Trading card games usually denote how often a card appears in packs or how powerful it is with a rarity system. However, Gundam Card Game rarities work a bit differently than you’re used to. It takes a bit to get used to, but you’ll find the basics of how it works below.
How do rarities work in Gundam TCG?
Rarity works a little differently in Gundam Card Game than it does in Magic: The Gathering or Pokémon TCG. Instead of cards reaching increasingly higher quantities of “rare,” some common and uncommon cards are rarer than those marked as “Legendary Rare.” Fortunately, figuring out how rare a card is in Gundam TCG is easy if you pay attention to the pluses.
The basic rarities in Gundam TCG are easy to follow. From least to most rare, you have:
- Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Legendary Rare
However, each of these rarities has alternate art variations that are denoted by a plus:
- Common+
- Uncommon+
- Rare+
- Legendary Rare+
There are also gold foil variations that are marked with a double plus:
- Common++
- Uncommon++
- Rare++
- Legendary Rare++
So, for example, even though it’s not very intuitive, you’ll find that Common+ cards appear in packs at a much lower rate than Legendary Rare ones. This is because, unlike some other TCGs, there is only one slot in which LR or higher rarities can appear. The exception to this is the plus and double plus versions of resource cards, which will only ever appear in the resource/token slot in a pack.
Strangely, from our experience, there’s another odd thing about the Gundam TCG. It seems as though Legendary Rare+ cards appear at a higher rate than Common+, Uncommon+, or Rare+.
The current full rarity list for Gundam TCG, as of the release of the Newtype Rising set, in ascending order, is:
- Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Legendary Rare
- Legendary Rare+
- Common+
- Uncommon+
- Rare+
- Common++
- Legendary Rare++
Note that we assume Uncommon++ and Rare++ will slot between Common++ and Legendary Rare++, but no cards with those rarities have been released yet.
