Topps took a new spin on some old ideas in their 2023 Composite Football release. Not having a license then for NFL cards, Topps gathered tentpole products Chrome, Chrome Black, Finest, Cosmic Chrome, Midnight, Heritage, Gallery, and Allen & Ginter into one showcase piece akin to Panini Chronicles. The new look and ideas kept retail shelves empty.
The jumping off point of this set is easy, 400 cards make the set. Digging deeper, all the subsets lead to multiple chase cards for collectors… over 100.
Fans of former Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud were left with a lot of options to fill their personal collection. There was throwback ’73 Pink Refractors, ’73 Xfractors, ’73 Superfractors, and short print Blue Wave Refractors (75), Gold Refractors (50), and Red (5), among many others.
Those loving the All-Etch line could get Stroud cards as Gold Refractors (50), Green Refractors (99), Lazer Refractors, Orange Refractors (25), Red Refractors (5), Xfractors, and the one-of-one, Superfractors.
The base value of Stroud’s Topps Composite Chrome All-Etch starts around $2.50 raw working up to $26 in perfect condition.
The asking price for the pictured 2023 Topps Composite Chrome All-Etch Superfractors #CAE23 CJ Stroud Gem Mint 9.5 has not been established publicly. A ballpark value can be found based on the other cards in the subset. An All-Etch Lazer Refractor is priced from $10 to $25 while a Green Refractor is $30 to $80.
Going to the harder to come by All-Etches, an Orange Refractor (5) runs around $250 in excellent condition.
Stroud can continue making money for collectors with his play on the field. As a rookie with the Houston Texans, he earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year adding a Pro Bowl selection. After passing for 4,108 yards with 23 touchdowns in 2023, Stroud had a slight sophomore slump throwing for 3,727 yards with 20 touchdowns against 12 picks. But his rushing totals improved from 167 yards to 233 and the Texans notched one more win in 2024 finishing 10-7.
