There’s no shortage of excitement in what Victor Wembanyama may become in the NBA, and there’s no shortage of cards bearing his name on the secondary market, but there is limited supply of Wemby’s autograph on high-end cards – and that is driving up prices and fervor among collectors.
Capitalizing on the enthusiasm over the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Topps released a universe unto itself, the 2023-24 Topps Mercury Victor Wembanyama set. The release included 20 base cards and an autograph-memorabilia patches from his debut game and 1,000th career point game.
Another cool feature in the boxes, dual signatures. Topps paired Wemby with six previous Rookie of the Year players; LeBron James, Shaquillie O’Neal, David Robinson, and even one with CJ Stroud (football).
Going that next step, each box had 10 insert cards. The inserts in short print, 10 and under, were autographed with a serial number.
Insert prints of 25-plus were Refractors (99), Blue Refractors (75), Texas Kaleidoscope Refractors (75), Gold Refractors (50), French Language (35), White Refractors (35), and Orange Refractors (25). The next round included Specimen Tank (15), Black Refractors (10), Tractor Bean Refractors (7), Alien Face Refractors (5), Red Refractors (5), Moon Rock Refractors (3), and Superfractors (1).
The auto-relic checklist was much smaller: French Language (75), Cosmic (50), Texas (35), Orange (25), Black (10), Red (5), and the holy grail of the set – Foilfractors (1/1). Topps produced 10 – 1-of-1 Mercury Victor Wembanyama Auto Relics Foilfractors with the number changing #WAR1, #WAR2, etc. to denote the cards.
