The sports card hobby can reward, and punish, those collectors willing to stick with a rising prospect. Selected in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft with the seventh pick by the Portland Trail Blazers, most round ball fans did not know of Shaedon Sharpe. Being a lottery pick, and trusting NBA general manager Joe Cronin, those in the hobby rolled the proverbial dice on Sharpe. While some may have unloaded their inventory, those who believed in Sharpe are starting to see the return on their investments.
Planning to be a one-and-done playing for John Calipari at the University of Kentucky, Sharpe (6-5, 208) jumped up a grade at Dream City Christian (Glendale, Ariz.) to graduate early only to bypass college entering the 2022 NBA Draft.
The former five-star recruit from London, Ontario, was eased into his shooting guard role with the Blazers. As a rookie he started 15 games averaging 9.9 points per game. His sophomore season saw an uptick with 25 starts out of 32 games played averaging 15.9 points. The 21-year-old got 52 starts during the 2024-25 campaign putting up 18.5 on average a night.
On the collecting side, the productivity from Sharpe’s third year saw a rise in his trading card value. A 2022-23 Panini Flawless Sharpe Auto out of 15 sold for $219 during an online auction. Start mixing a patch with an auto, the sticker price shoots up.
A 2022-23 Panini Flawless Share Patch Auto Ruby sold for $725 in February. Also in February, a Flawless Prime three-color Patch Auto out of 25 sold for $1,400.
