Going Yard With BGS

The MLB All-Star Festivities start tonight with the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. The annual spectacle when feats of great strengthen wow the crowd as towering bombs leave the yard. This year the card is stacked with some of the best long ball knockers in the MLB, but not all of them hold up in the hobby. Now, let’s see who’s Going Yard With BGS.

Shohei Ohtani: Longest HR this season – 470 FT

Ohtani has been an absolute star this season as he is finally living up to all the hype that was projected onto him back in 2018. Likewise, his card values have been absolutely soaring as of late. However, the go-to here may be a tad out of reach for the hobbyist. This Black Label 2013 BBM Japan Gold Holofoil is currently listed for $750K. Here’s to the best pitcher in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby this year.

Joey Gallo: Longest HR this season – 462 FT

Texas Rangers fans are well aware of Gallo’s power at the plate. Sadly, they are also well aware of his ability to swing and miss……….a lot. Still, when Joey connects he is capable of moon shot power. His best BGS card currently available his 2012 Bowman Chrome Draft Orange Refractor Autograph /25. There are no less than four copies available at the moment.

Matt Olson: Longest HR this season – 445 FT

Olson may have a little less pop than the first two entries on this list, but you can never discount hitting at Coors Field. Also, keep in mind that only three players in the Majors have hit more home runs than Olson since he was called up for good in 2017. His best BGS card on the market right now is this Gem Mint 2013 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor /5.

Salvador Perez: Longest HR this season – 460 FT

As I mentioned above, some of these guys don’t hold up well in the hobby. In the case of Perez, this may be because he plays in Kansas City and he doesn’t connect well outside of his fan base. His best BGS card available right now is this Gem Mint 2013 Topps Tribute Gold WBC Autograph /15.

Pete Alonso: Longest HR this season – 443 FT

What’s not to love about a guy whose nickname is The Polar Bear. Though the market has cooled on him since his rookie debut, Pete still demands a premium on the secondary market. For example, this Gem Mint 2016 Bowman Chrome Draft Orange Refractor Autograph /25 has plenty of eyes on it.

Trey Mancini: Longest HR this season – 451 FT

Mancini may not hold up in the hobby compared to some of the other guys on this list, but his story is a fantastic one. In fact, how could you not be rooting for him this evening. He’s beat cancer, so what a T-Mobile HR Derby? As far as cards are concerned, his best available is this Gem Mint 2017 Bowman Chrome Rookie Gold Refractor Autograph /50.

Going Yard With BGS

Trevor Story: Longest HR this season – 466 FT

There is something about the hometown kid in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. This time around it’s Rockies star, Trevor Story. He’s been on collectors’ radar since 2011 when he was a young prospect in the Rockies farm system. This Pristine 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft Autograph is just a POP 2 on the BGS Pop Report and is currently up for grabs.

Juan Soto: Longest HR this season: 437 FT

The final participant in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby is Juan Soto. Next to Ohtani, Soto has the largest market demand right now in the hobby. To see that, look no further than this 2016 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor Autograph /25. The price asking price on this is $210K.

Eric Norton

Eric has been collecting cards since he was seven, buying singles with his allowance from the lone card shop in his hometown of Springtown, TX. Currently, Eric’s collecting interest revolve around picking up cards he had in his childhood that he let go of at some point, and Seattle Mariners third basemen, Kyle Seager.
