2017 Upper Deck Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial Hockey celebrates 100 years of the sport’s history in Canada’s biggest city.

Back in the 2009-10 campaign, Upper Deck struck gold with a set focused on the centennial season for the Montreal Canadiens. In addition to a loaded base set that perfectly covered the club’s history to that point, there were some heavily-desired hits coming out of boxes and tins that still perform exceedingly well when offered for sale.

While it is too early to definitively tell if the 2017 Upper Deck Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial product will achieve the same heights on the secondary market, there is certainly a good chance that it does.

Base Set and Parallels

At this point, the design for the base set cards is known, but set will be made up of 200 cards. It should have a mix of 100 current and retired Maple Leafs in the short set, with the possibility of subset cards that cover the franchise’s history in the next 100 short printed base cards. These come once per pack in the 12-pack tins and once in every other pack in hobby boxes.

As for parallels, there are going to be Blue Maple Leaf Die-Cuts which appear once in every other pack on average.

Autographs and Parallels

One of the lasting legacies that the Canadiens Centennial set has is the insane demand for some of the autograph cards – especially of those that are difficult to find. Maple Leaf Marks (1:12 hobby packs, 1:48 in tins) will include autographs from current players along with legends like Doug Gilmour, Darryl Sittler, and Wendel Clark. It will be interesting to see how tough it will be to pull ink from current Maple Leafs rookies Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander as all three have been hobby sensations in recent months.

Other autograph collections include AKA along with multi-player signed cards like Maple Leaf Dual, Triple, and Quad Marks.

Memorabilia cards will also have a presence in 2017 Upper Deck Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial, but they will be considerably scarcer than the autographs. Maple Leaf Materials (1:158 in tins) will be joined by the much tougher Maple Leaf Materials Duos (1:1,346 in tins) and Maple Leaf Materials Trios (1:4,039 in tins). Another concept that was revealed in sales literature is Treasured Relics.

Box Toppers

Each tin will include a Mini Championship Banner which pays tribute to each of the franchise’s Stanley Cup wins going back to the NHL’s first season of 1917-18. They measure 3.25″ x 8.5″.

I can’t wait for this set, but I can not understand why they would choose to have the old Leaf logo as the background of their centennial set when they just updated the logo SPECIFICALLY for the Centennial season.

  2. Paul 11 October, 2017 at 20:05

Why isn’t there any Mike Palmateer card of any sort in this set? He was a great tender with the Leafs. I am saddened that this is not happening.

  3. Brian 12 October, 2017 at 22:40

@Shaun, I agree with you, players I would have liked to see.. Omitted because print rights couldn’t be obtained maybe??

@Rino — Upper Deck does not release the print runs of cards that are not numbered, just the detailed breakdown.

  6. Paul Dunn 30 January, 2018 at 12:29

No Palmateer??? How does this make sense? Pretty sure he was a pivitol part of the late 70’s runs. More so then maybe Bruce Boudreau? Bummer. Guessing there maybe a second set to follow? Other big names not here either – Keon, Sundin, Broda, Domi, Joseph…hopefully otherwise it wasn’t very well thought out. I know everyone can’t be happy but any of them not on so Hoglund or Boudreau were included doesn’t make sense to me :/
