Panini America’s 2013 baseball slate will included a revival of the Pinnacle brand in the form of 2013 Pinnacle Baseball.

Packing two autographs in each 24-pack hobby box, it will carry a suggested retail price of $2.99 a pack and include a meaty lineup of inserts and parallels to go with a 200-card base set that includes 50 Rookie Cards.

Each box includes the two autos along with three Museum Collection parallels printed with Nufex technology, two Artist’s Proofs, 10 other inserts, three Clear Vision plastic inserts, five more Nufex cards and five additional plastic cards — 29 total inserts per box, according to the company.

The Artist’s Proofs are hobby-only inserts, while other standard inserts will include Team 2020 (10 players), Awaiting the Call (10 cards), Position Powers (20), Behind the Numbers (10) and five cards each for Looking Back and The Hit King.

The Nufex inserts will include 10 Team Pinnacle cards, 15 Slugfests, 10 Aces, 12 The Naturals and eight Z-Teamers. Plastic inserts will include 16 Pinnacle of Success, 16 Swing For the Fences, 12 Essence of the Game and eight Skylines cards.

The product also includes a five-card tribute insert to Pete Rose — who can appear on cards here because they are not MLB Properties-approved — called The Hit King.

Looks better than I expected. What is this Nufex stuff? Sounds interesting at least. Good to see Rose back on some cards again too

This product sucked when it DID have a license. Looks absolutely horrific now. It is a catch 22, I want Topps to have competition but the competition can’t make enough money to put out great products without a license. I love Prizm but without logos it just cheap.

wish they could put out cards with uniforms and team names. its killing them. i bought a box of prizm (terrible box pull) and just would have been so nice if done with mlb uniforms etc.

Jarod re: “I want Topps to have competition but the competition can’t make enough money to put out great products without a license.”

That’s actually NOT how it works. MLB chose to go with Topps only. Being able to use logos is basically like being able to own your own Subway restaurant or another brand. In this case, MLB is letting just one entity do that by its choice. Panini could actually make more money on average per box sold because it doesn’t have to PAY a royalty to MLB for using logos — however, yes, it’s obvious that it probably does sell fewer boxes than it would WITH the logos.

    Chris,

Oh, I fully understand the concept. I am very mad with MLB that they just renewed the exclusive license with Topps as well. Exclusives rarely make anything better for the consumer and in this case that is especially true. Topps has been gliding by with horrible service, quality, redemption replacements etc and will continue to do so with no concerns about competition. Panini tried and made a great looking product with Prizm but it will never work without a license and the logos that come with it. Thank you for your insight as maybe it helped another reader that was unaware of how licensing works.

I remember the last time this brand was around,(Opps gave up my age) the artist proof’s were the hottest thing going.

I’m sure Panini is smart enough to figure out how they can get all the color chasers to purchase these boxes. But it does sound like they are trying some new styles at least…plastic, nufex….interesting. Their gold prizms (any sport) seem to have value to them and they look the same as the base card just gold…no logos.

I agree with most….no MLB logos or markings makes it look like you play for the red team or the blue team..

    Peace

MLB has its reasoning, criteria and needs for its products. Topps is apparently meeting what matters most to MLB and it’s MLB’s call on who it gives its license to.

The only reason topps gets a license is because it throws more $$$$$$$$$$ at MLB than anyone else. We all know it’s all about the $$$$$$$$$$.panini had one good baseball release NT.The rest of their baseball products aren’t worth the cardboard it’s printed on.

If you think it’s only about the money, then why wouldn’t MLB sign on as many money-making companies as it could? Or, do you think MLB realizes that there’s a point of saturation with MLB cards these days to the point where 5 companies pumping out sets wouldn’t allow any of them to sell enough to continue to make money for it?

Think about what happened in the early 2000s. How many companies were there? How many died on their own or were close to it while making MLB cards?

  10. Jarod Scoggin 14 May, 2013 at 16:01

It is about the money. To get an exclusive it costs more than it would for a license if everyone could buy one. I would guarantee that Topps pays more for this than the total would be for 5 different companies paying outside of an exclusive arangement. That and MLB’s concern is not for us as card consumers but for them and their bottom line. Just because Topps gets the exclusive does not mean they are doing a good job which they aren’t.

  11. charles 14 May, 2013 at 17:12

I would have to agree it is about money, and to much product in the past. that’s why you limit, this would make the company(s), compete with product, do you or anyone thinks that MLB cares about topps customers having to what months for cards, do they pressure players to sign quicker, the MLB made a very weak attempt at promoting cards in the last few years. theres just not enough money in it for them or anyone outside of collecting. just today I had to what for 1 hour on the phone to be told that theres nothing they can do but give me a replacement card if I don’t want to wait , and it would be radom, I said this is the player I collect, sorry this is the best we can do. so now its a gamble to buy a box, and then because they don’t have to give you what is promised on the redemption, that to has become a gamble. This is the best the Hobby can do for collectors, and one thing more Chris please show me on a box or pack that state that you mite get a redemption and have to wait months maybe years, IT”S NOT THERE

Wow, this discussion went off the rails.

I always liked Pinnacle and Fleer cards the best in the 1990’s. Naturally they both went out of business. I loved the Dufex cards back in the day…now they pitch it as Nufex. Would love to know how Nufex differs from Dufex.

Everybody seems to be missing one MAJOR thing about these cards… The Mike Trout card no longer lists him as a rookie (two years after his REAL rookies were available).
