Topps is throwing Chrome fans a curveball with a new product line.

Though details have not yet been formally announced, the longest-running manufacturer of baseball cards will be adding Topps Chrome Update to its roster of products this fall, according to a sales post on

Each 2013 Topps Mega Box, which is posted for $19.99 plus shipping on the site, will include five packs of the forthcoming 2013 Topps Update release set for arrival on Oct. 16. Also included in the boxes that will begin shipping on Oct. 23 will be two four-card packs of 2013 Topps Chrome Update.

According to the post, the 50-card set will only be found in these boxes and it will include Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig — and it says it will be the only Topps Chrome card made for him, though we’ll have to wait for the Sept. 25 release of 2013 Topps Chrome to know for sure. (The company has previously stated Puig will be in Topps Chrome via Twitter and he appears on a PDF checklist previously released by the company.)

The listing also promises two Chrome Update parallels (Gold and Black) as well as one insert set and two hits-based sets. The insert set will be a 20-card Postseason Heroes release, while there will be 25 All-Star Stitches Chrome Relics cards and 10 All-Star Stitches Autograph Relics.

    Not sure why they want to go with “Gold and Black” parallels rather than Refractors. I know that Topps usually goes overkill on the rainbow of colors in the Chrome releases, but I’d much rather have a refractor than a plain chrome card with a colored border.

    Just another Gimmick for them to sucker people out of their money. Look at the exclusive mini set sold through their website. Last year it sold out in hours this year several months after release they are still available because they cranked up production out the wazoo.

    Exclusive = Gimmick
