Extremely Rare Vintage Baseball Cards We Saw at The National
ROSEMONT, Ill. — The National Sports Collectors Convention has always been a haven for vintage collectors, and dealers at the 2026 edition of the show brought out some extremely rare vintage baseball cards.
Most of the vintage dealers are clustered right inside the main entrance at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, and within the sea of T206 tobacco cards, Goudey gum cards, and 1950s and ’60s Topps issues are some extreme rarities collectors almost never see in person.
Below, we run down some of the rarest vintage baseball cards we spotted on the convention floor.
1916 H801-9 The Globe
The H801-9 The Globe cards are identical to the M101-4 Sporting News issue, except they have a different back that advertises a local Pennsylvania clothing store. According to contemporary advertisements in the Harrisburg Star-Independent, these cards were released in batches of 20 and free to any customer who purchased in the boys’ clothing, furnishings or hats departments on specific days. The regional distribution has meant that many of the Globe Clothing-backed examples have been lost to time. As of this writing, only 149 examples have been assessed by PSA, and two examples in particular caught some extra attention on the show floor. Found at the Howard Chasser’s A Few of My Favorite Things booth, the card pictured above is the only PSA-graded example of Walter Johnson’s card. The Joe Jackson card is also extremely rare; there’s only three on the pop report.

1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Back
There are 16 different advertising backs on the 1909-11 T206 cards produced by the American Tobacco Company. Some, like Sweet Caporal and Piedmont, are pretty easy to find. Others, most notably the Ty Cobb “King of the Smoking Tobacco World” back, are nearly impossible to find. As of this writing, PSA has encapsulated only 21 examples of Cobb’s card with the matching Cobb back, and one of them made an appearance at the 2026 National.

1953 Stahl-Meyer Franks Mickey Mantle
Only five cards from the 1953 Stahl-Meyer Franks set have ever earned a PSA 9 designation, and the biggest name on that list is — by far — Mickey Mantle. Originally packaged with 100 percent all-beef frankfurters produced by the New York-based Stahl-Meyer Foods, these cards have a lot going against them. Between the regional production and packaging conditions, there shouldn’t be high-grade examples, so when one turns up, it turns heads. Even more impressive about this particular Mantle? The next-best example in PSA’s database at the time of this writing is a only PSA 7, which is also a Pop 1.

1933 Goudey Nap Lajoie
In 1933, the Goudey Gum Co. released a set that many children enjoyed collecting. The only problem? No one could find card #106. Many kids and adults wrote to Goudey regarding the gap in the checklist, so the company issued the “missing” Nap Lajoie card the following year. Naturally, there are fewer examples of Lajoie’s card in circulation today than any other card from the set. As of this writing, PSA has only graded 100 examples of Lajoie’s card, which represents a scant 0.08 percent of all 1933 Goudey cards the company has assessed — so this PSA 1 example is not something you’ll see every day.

1934 Lou Gehrig Wheaties Box
In 1934, Lou Gehrig became the first athlete to appear on the cover of a Wheaties box, starting a tradition that continues today. There are only two known examples of a fully intact, unflattened version of this cereal box, one of which was available at The National. Gehrig later appeared on two other Wheaties boxes and has several hand-cut cards that came printed on boxes during the 1930s.

1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner
As an added bonus, we’re including the two T206 Honus Wagner cards that were on display at the convention, though neither were available for sale. Both Heritage and Memory Lane Auctions had an authentic example of the industry’s “holy grail” at their booths.
