Lorcana’s 10th set is just around the corner. Whispers in the Well is the next major release for Lorcana and marks the second set in the current rotation. Disney and Ravensburger have kept many of the details close to the vest, but enough details have leaked that we have a solid idea of what to expect — and this next set is going to be a doozy.

Release Date

Whispers in the Well is slated to be launched in local game stores on Friday, November 7. Keep an eye out for pre-release events, the chance to win a special promo card, and more. Larger big-box stores and online retailers will see the set release one week later, on November 14.

New Card Type and Ability

Whispers in the Well introduces a brand-new card type: a partial Glimmer called a Whisper. While the mechanics of this type aren’t yet clear, flavor text suggests much of Whispers in the Well will revolve around combining Whispers into a completed Glimmer. What happens next? Well, we’ll have to find out.

Whisper cards have a parchment-like appearance. Whispers seem to be pages torn from a lorebook, and the yellowed, frayed edges are a perfect fit for the aesthetic. There are four confirmed Whispers:

  • Ursula — Whisper of Vanessa
  • Gaston— Frightful Bully
  • Megara—Secret Keeper
  • Simba—King in the Making

There also seems to be a new ability called Boost, but again, its purpose isn’t totally clear. From the leaks so far, Boost looks like it’s related to the Shift ability. The Whisper cards we’ve seen so far rely on the player placing a card underneath them.

It’s an interesting spin; rather than expending Ink to play the card, you’re sacrificing a card.

If you use an ability that lets you view the top cards of your deck, this provides a ripe opportunity to discard unwanted draws. On the other hand, placing a card underneath a Whisper when you can’t see the cards means you risk losing what might be a pivotal draw.

New Franchises

Disney is slowly introducing more franchises into Lorcana, and Whispers in the Well throws the fan-favorite Gargoyles into the ring. Only a few characters have been revealed so far.

Demona — Scourge of the Wyvern Clan is a six-Ink card with five Strength, six Willpower, and the impressive ability to exert all opposing characters when played.

A few of the other Gargoyles cards we know are:

  • Demona — Betrayer of the Clan
  • Coldstone — Reanimated Cyborg
  • Bronx — Ferocious Beast
  • Goliath — Guardian of Castle Wyvern
  • Brooklyn — Second in Command
  • Goliath — Clan Leader

The next brand-new franchise is The Black Cauldron. Its primary card is The Black Cauldron, a three-Ink item that lets you move a character from your discard pile under the cauldron. Its secondary ability lets you play characters that are under the cauldron, giving you the ability to reanimate defeated characters. That means it introduces a brand-new archetype to Lorcana deck builds.

A few other cards are:

  • The Horned King — Heartless Devil
  • The Horned King — Wicked Ruler
  • The Horned King — Triumphant Ghoul
  • Hen Wen — Prophetic Pig
  • Hen Wen’s Visions
  • Cauldron Born
  • Gwythaint — Savage Hunter

Card Count

Ravensburger hasn’t released a total card list yet, but it is expected to have a base of 204 cards, plus 18 Enchanted, 18 Epic, and 2 Iconic cards for a total of 242. So far, roughly 190 cards from Whispers in the Well have been revealed. We will provide a full set list upon its launch.

The two Iconic cards are Hades — Looking for a Deal and Ariel — Ethereal Voice. Hades’ ability lets you draw two cards unless your opponent places a character of your choosing at the bottom of their deck. Ariel grants card draw upon playing a song, provided you have a card placed under her.

Story

We won’t dive too deeply into the story; after all, discovering it is half the fun, and we don’t want to spoil things with our theories (no matter how well thought out they may be). That said, Ravensburger has teased a couple of details.

Whispers in the Well has the tagline “Light Your Path.” It says, “Grab your magnifying glass and follow the whispers. It will take a team with a cunning mind, an observant eye, and a playful attitude to solve the mysteries that await you below.”

Much of the art depicts detective-style characters, and we already know Judy Hopps plays a big role. Whatever secrets the titular Well hides, they’re sure to keep gameplay fun.
