Dinosaurs were harmed in the making of Mars Attacks: Occupation
By Ryan Cracknell | Hobby Editor
2016 Topps Mars Attacks: Occupation (aka, the set that was made exclusively for Kickstarter) is getting closer to releasing. Among the cards is a series of Dinosaurs Attacks inserts. And in true Mars Attacks fashion, they take on a theme of obliteration. In this case, it’s the dinosaurs themselves.
The product’s Dinosaurs Attacks Letter-Press cards have actual dinosaurs in them, even if you don’t notice it at first glance.
While producing the cards, dinosaur fossils were ground up into a powder and added to the ink used to print the cards.
The fossil isn’t from your generic dinosaur either. Millions of years ago, it was a part of a tyrannosaurs rex.
Fossils are too hard to be made into dust with basic sweat and grunt work. In order to get the fossil ground up fine enough to add it to the ink it required some special treatment. They were taken to the Earth and Environment Sciences Department at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where specialized machinery was used.
2016 Topps Mars Attacks: Occupation is scheduled to be sent out to those that contributed to the Kickstarter campaign soon. The product isn’t being offered by traditional hobby distribution.
