Cheap Wax Wednesday Box Breaks: 2022 Topps Opening Day Baseball

Share:

We did it, folks! We have made it through another baseball offseason. Games that count start back up on Thursday. How else would we celebrate Opening Day than with a box of 2022 Topps Opening Day Baseball.

Topps debuted Opening Day as a standalone release in 1998. It has been released every year since with the exception of 2009. What happened in 2009? I have no idea. The first release in 1998 was a base-only product, with no inserts or parallels. A lot has changed since then, though, and the current version boasts an insert in every pack.

Pack 1 highlights:

Marcus Stroman, Rosie Red Mascots (1 in every 3 packs) & Willson Contreras

Mascot inserts appear on an annual basis with an eye towards young collectors.

Pack 2:

Andrew Vaughn, Orbit Mascots (1:3 packs) & Yu Darvish

Pack 3:

Nelson Cruz, Miguel Cabrera, Corbin Burnes, Akil Baddoo, Javier Baez & Giancarlo Stanton Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 4:

Whit Merrifield, Manny Machado, Gerrit Cole, Dinger Mascots (1:3 packs), Josh Hader & Adolis Garcia

The Rockies are hoping newly signed Kris Bryant hits lots and lots of “Dingers” in Colorado.

Pack 5:

Ryan McMahon, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Jo Adell, Mike Yastrzemski & Christian Yelich Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 6:

J.D. Martinez, Corey Seager, Matt Manning RC, Zack Wheeler, Christian Pache & Marlins Opening Day (1:5 packs)

Pack 7:

Bryce Harper, Josiah Gray RC, Justin Verlander, Brandon Woodruff, Didi Gregorius & Blue Jays Triple Play (1:8 packs)

These Triple Play tri-card inserts remind me of mini cards from 1996-97 Collector’s Choice Basketball. I opened a lot of that product back in the day.

Pack 8:

Jarred Kelenic, Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., Mariner Moose Mascots (1:3 packs), George Springer & DJ LeMahieu Blue Foil (1:19 packs)

Pack 9:

Nick Madrigal, Anthony Rizzo, Max Scherzer & David Ortiz Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 10:

Jacob deGrom, Liam Hendriks, Fernando Tatis, Jr., Mr. Met Mascots (1:3 packs), Xander Bogaerts & Anthony Rendon

It is unfortunate that two of the game’s star players, Tatis & deGrom, are starting the season with stays on the injured list.

Pack 11:

Ronald Acuna, Jr., Kyle Muller RC, Lars Nootbaar RC, Andrew McCutchen, Ryan Mountcastle, Paul Goldschmidt & Red Sox Triple Play (1:8 packs)

Pack 12:

Pete Alonso, Ke’Bryan Hayes, Joey Bart & Vlad Guerrero, Jr. Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 13:

Rafael Devers, Christian Yelich, Julio Urias, Fredbird Mascots (1:3 packs) & Yadier Molina

Some people don’t like horizontal cards but when the photo is as good as the Devers here, how can you not like that?

Pack 14:

Shohei Ohtani, Jarren Duran RC, Rhys Hoskins, Cody Bellinger, Charlie Blackmon & Reds Opening Day (1:5 packs)

Suarez, seen here on the Reds Opening Day card, won’t be participating in Opening Day with the Reds. He was traded to Seattle this offseason.

Pack 15:

Jose Abreu, Aaron Judge, Jack Flaherty, Alec Bohm, Jonathan India & Hank Aaron Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 16:

Joey Votto, Alex Bregman, Bernie Brewer Mascots (1:3 packs), Corey Kluber, Adam Wainwright & Luis Robert

It looks like Adam Wainwright, at 40 years old, will be the Cardinals Opening Day starter this season.

Pack 17:

Shane McClanahan, Justin Turner, Casey Mize, Alex Verdugo & Mike Trout Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 18:

Lucas Giolito, Trea Turner, Brandon Lowe, Bryan Reynolds, Bo Bichette & White Sox Triple Play (1:8 packs)

The Bichette is another horizontal card done right.

Pack 19:

Trey Mancini, Kyle Lewis, Dylan Carlson, Keibert Ruiz & Cubs Opening Day (1:5 packs)

I love those throwback teal Mariners jerseys. They bring me right back to Griffey playing in Seattle.

Pack 20:

Carlos Santana, Kris Bryant, Mike Moustakas, Yoan Moncada & Cody Bellinger Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 21:

Juan Soto, Josh Donaldson, Jesse Winker, Swinging Friar Mascots (1:3 packs), DJ LeMahieu, Josh Bell & Evan Longoria

Pack 22:

Starling Marte, Sixto Sanchez, Michael Brantley, Craig Kimbrel & Jim Thome Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Starling Marte, and seemingly every other well-known player, won’t be suiting up in Oakland this season. He joins Olson, Manaea, Chapman, and Bassitt on the long list of former Athletics.

Pack 23:

Carlos Rodon, Joey Gallo, Jose Altuve, Brandon Marsh RC, Brewers Opening Day (1:5 packs) & Gavin Sheets Blue Foil (1:19 packs)

Pack 24:

Kyle Schwarber, Andrew Benintendi, Giancarlo Stanton, Nick Castellanos & Yankees Triple Play (1:8 packs)

Pack 25:

Austin Riley, Patrick Wisdom, Mrs. Met Mascots (1:3 packs), Trevor Larnach & Francisco Lindor

Pack 26:

Will Smith (not that Will Smith), Mookie Betts, Bobby Dalbec, Alex Kirilloff & Ronald Acuna, Jr. Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

It will definitely be fun to have Acuna, one of the best young players in the game, back on the diamond in Atlanta.

Pack 27:

Ryan Zimmerman, Freddie Freeman, Paws Mascots (1:3 packs), Matt Chapman & Ozzie Albies

Pack 28:

Wander Franco (RC), Walker Buehler, J.P. Crawford, John Means & Angels Opening Day (1:5 packs)

Pack 29:

J.T. Realmuto, Cedric Mullins, Jake Cronenworth, Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow & Javier Baez Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 30:

Alek Manoah, Kyle Tucker, Rangers Captain Mascots (1:3 packs), Buster Posey, Matt Olson & Jose Ramirez

Pack 31:

Shane Bieber, Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton & Rockies Opening Day (1:5 packs)

Pack 32:

Nolan Arenado, Triston McKenzie, Zack Greinke & Babe Ruth Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Cleveland Guardians. Are you used to that one yet?

Pack 33:

Mike Trout, Sluggerrr Mascots (1:3 packs) & Ketel Marte

Pack 34:

Mitch Haniger, Eloy Jimenez & Sammy Sosa Bomb Squad (1:3 packs)

Pack 35:

Randy Arozarena, Albert Pujols, Yordan Alvarez, Stephen Strasburg & Braves Triple Play (1:8 packs)

Pack 36:

Jazz Chisholm, Jr., Jean Segura, Brandon Belt, Tarik Skubal, Trevor Story & Red Sox Opening Day (1:5 packs)

Wait, Story and Red Sox back to back in the final pack? What are the odds?

Lastly, the Story card back. Hopefully, at least for me, he can keep up his productive offensive numbers in Boston.

Well, I didn’t hit any of the extremely tough pulls, but that should be expected. The tough ones are really tough in Opening Day. Walk This Way inserts fall just once in every 679 packs. It gets tougher from there with Luck of the Irish (1:1,698) and Dugout Peeks (1:3,395). Autographs are also tough, found just once in every 849 packs.

2022 Topps Opening Day Baseball is certainly not about the hits. It is still a fun rip, though, and one that I use to celebrate the start of another baseball season.
