1994 Score Baseball was split into two series, each with a 330-card base checklist. The base design is pretty simple using blue borders with a team color matched nameplate. I like it! There was a full checklist parallel set, Gold Rush, which changed the card borders to gold and added a gold hue across the entire card.

As far as inserts go, there are only two to hunt in this box. Gold Stars are limited to 6,500 copies each and you should expect to find a couple in each box. The tougher insert, Dream Team, falls just once in every two boxes. These have an old-fashioned look and feature players wearing throwback jerseys.

Pack 1 highlights:

Albert Belle, Orel Hershiser, Robin Yount & David McCarty Gold Rush (one per pack)

Pack 2:

Jeff Bagwell & Tino Martinez Gold Rush

The base cards seemed to survive from the bricking in these old packs. However, the Gold Rush parallels took the majority of the damage.

Pack 3:

Roger Clemens, Ryne Sandberg & Jim Thome Gold Rush

Pack 4:

Rickey Henderson, Fernando Valenzuela, Tom Glavine, Paul O’Neill, Will Clark & Luis Aquino Gold Rush

Henderson in a Blue Jay uniform seems weird. He played just 44 games for Toronto.

Pack 5:

Fred McGriff, Goose Gossage, Mark Grace & Kirby Puckett Gold Rush

Pack 6:

Carlos Baerga, Omar Vizquel, Wally Joyner, Joe Carter & John Jaha Gold Rush

Pack 7:

Barry Bonds, Mike Timlin Gold Rush & Brett Butler Gold Stars (1:18 packs)

Pack 8:

Mark Langston, Dennis Eckersley, Chuck Knoblauch & Jose Lind Gold Rush

Ready for your close up, Eck?

Pack 9:

Roberto Alomar, Don Mattingly, Ken Griffey, Jr. & Brent Gates Gold Rush

I absolutely love the image of Griffey bunting here. How many times do we think he did that? He did rack up just eight sacrifice bunts in his career.

Pack 10:

Craig Biggio, Jose Rijo, Jim Abbott & Jeff Branson Gold Rush

Pack 11:

Lenny Dykstra, Cal Ripken, Jr., Gary Sheffield & Frank Thomas Gold Rush

Pack 12:

Lee Smith, Moises Alou, Vinny Castilla, Jimmy Key & Mark Portugal Gold Rush

Cool shot of Moises — when you ignore the fact that his eyes are closed.

Pack 13:

Ramon Martinez, John Kruk, Andres Galarraga, Tony Gwynn & Eduardo Perez Gold Rush

Pack 14:

Roger Clemens, Ryne Sandberg & Kevin Brown Gold Rush

Pack 15:

Jamie Moyer, Frank Thomas, Kirby Puckett, Tino Martinez & Darren Holmes Gold Rush

This Moyer image almost feels like it could pass for a Topps variation short print.

Pack 16:

Brett Butler, Darren Daulton, Eric Karros & Bob Patterson Gold Rush

Pack 17:

Mike Greenwell, Mo Vaughn & Jose Canseco Gold Rush

Jose pitching? Yes! Jose pitched just one inning in his career, allowing three earned runs on two hits and three walks.

Pack 18:

Bret Saberhagen, Dave Stewart, Jim Thome, Curt Schilling & Jim Leyritz Gold Rush

Pack 19:

Will Clark, Paul O’Neill, Tom Glavine & Chicago White Sox Gold Rush

These team stadium cards serve as team checklist cards on the backs.

Pack 20:

John Olerud, Dante Bichette, Doc Gooden, Lou Whitaker Gold Rush & New York Yankees

Pack 21:

Juan Gonzalez, Randy Johnson, Kenny Rogers, Carlos Baerga & Willie Blair Gold Rush

Pack 22:

Vinny Castilla, Steady Eddie Murray, Lee Smith & Anthony Young Gold Rush

Pack 23:

Lou Whitaker, Wade Boggs, Kevin Brown, Jose Canseco, Kenny Lofton, Lofton Gold Rush & John Burkett Gold Stars (1:18 packs)

Lofton, on the other hand, did bunt quite a bit. He finished his career with 72 sacrifice bunts. No doubt he had his fair share of bunt singles as well.

Pack 24:

Rick Aguilera, Barry Larkin, Matt Williams, Boston Red Sox & John Franco Gold Rush

Pack 25:

Eddie Murray, Kevin Mitchell, Jeff Bagwell & Todd Jones Gold Rush

Pack 26:

Goose Gossage, Kirby Puckett, Tino Martinez, Frank Thomas & Gregg Jefferies Gold Rush

Pack 27:

Jimmy Key, Rickey Henderson & Gene Harris Gold Rush

Pack 28:

Goose Gossage, Mark Grace & Tom Gordon Gold Rush

Pack 29:

Omar Vizquel, Joe Carter, Mark Whiten & Wade Boggs Gold Rush

Whiten crushed four home runs on September 7, 1993. He also racked up 12 RBI in that game.

Pack 30:

Barry Bonds & Ryan Bowen Gold Rush

Pack 31:

Mike Mussina, Ivan Rodriguez, Brian Jordan, Baltimore Orioles & Milwaukee Brewers Gold Rush

Pack 32:

Ken Griffey, Jr., Don Mattingly, Otis Nixon & Mike Mussina Gold Rush

Pack 33:

Craig Biggio, Jose Rijo & Milt Thompson Gold Rush

Pack 34:

Gary Sheffield, Cal Ripken, Jr. & Damon Berryhill Gold Rush

Pack 35:

John Olerud, Lee Smith, Dante Bichette, Vinny Castilla, Moises Alou & Travis Fryman Gold Rush

Pack 36:

Albert Belle, Orel Hershiser, Fred McGriff & Mel Rojas Gold Rush

Lastly, the Albert Belle card back. Belle was just starting his run of ’90s domination.

Surface damage to the cards aside, this was still a fun early ’90s break. There are a handful of great photo choices. Unfortunately, the Gold Stars found in this box weren’t great and there wasn’t a Dream Team insert to be found. Maybe it is worth another shot if I can find a cheap enough box.
