Welcome to the weekly Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold list, where we take a quick and fun look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards over the last week.

The Hot List

Shohei Ohtani

If Ohtani keeps on packing the power over the final week of the season, he could win his third straight league home run title in what might amount to his third straight campaign as MVP. Also back to pitching, Ohtani has struck out 54 batters in 41 innings pitched to go along with his 53 home runs and 99 RBI. Soon, he and the Dodgers will take to playoff stage, and who knows what may happen there?

Aaron Judge

Judge recently passed Hall of Famers Yogi Berra and Joe DiMaggio on the New York Yankees’ all-time career home run list, and he is just two longballs shy of getting to his fourth career 50-homer season. The likely American League batting champ will fall short of a Triple Crown, but a third MVP award could be in his future

Josh Allen

As one of the most consistent passers so far this season, Allen has led the Buffalo Bills to a 3-0 start. On 99 pass attempts, Allen has yet to throw an interception, keeping up a trend that started last season when he only threw six in 20 games between the regular season and playoffs. Could this be a sign the Bills are going to make another deep postseason run? Time will tell.

Nick Kurtz

From a power standpoint, few players have ever broken into the major leagues with as much gusto as Kurtz. It’s not that the 22-year-old has hit 33 home runs, it’s how the likely American League Rookie of the Year hits those home runs. Many of them are towering shots that travel well over 400 feet, and any time your highlight reel looks like that, you’re bound to command attention.

Jonathan Taylor

The bull-rushing Indianapolis running back did not get into the end zone on the ground in the first two weeks of the season, but Taylor made up for it in Week 3. In a dominating performance, Taylor gained 102 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Colts downed the Tennessee Titans, 41-20. The two-time Pro Bowler leads the NFL with 338 rushing yards through three games, and he has added another 93 through the air.

A’ja Wilson

Consecutive Weeks on Hot List: 🔥🔥🔥

For the first time in history, the WNBA has a four-time MVP. Wilson had another dominating season, including several massive performances during the Las Vegas Aces’ 16-game winning streak to close the regular season. For good measure, Wilson also added her third career Defensive Player of the Year award to her mantle and will try to lead the Aces deep into the postseason.

Kelsey Mitchell

An eighth-year veteran, Mitchell is thriving for the Indiana Fever in the playoffs. Early in her career, Mitchell endured some of the worst seasons in franchise history, but she has been a key contributor to Indiana’s turnaround, finishing fifth in this year’s MVP vote. She helped the Fever upset the Atlanta Dream in the opening round of the postseason, and her 34 points in Game 1 against the Las Vegas Aces got Indiana in the win column to start the semifinals.

Matthew Schaefer

As the top pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, New York Islanders fans are naturally excited to see Schaefer take to the ice. One preseason game in, and the fanbase seems to be sold. Schaefer had an assist, and his electrifying skating led fans to chant his name during the preseason opener. “It was fun to watch,” said coach Patrick Roy. “He’s only 18 years old, but it’s pretty impressive to see him play the way he’s playing. The fans love him.”

Alex Turcotte

Turcotte plays the game with tons of energy, and with a full season of experience, expectations are high for the 24-year-old going into the new campaign. While it’s only the preseason, Turcotte looked ready to go in the opener with a goal and an assist. “I want to help the team any way I can and obviously get as much ice time as I can,” he said afterward. “So I think, yeah, I’ve just got to earn it and keep going I think that’s a good start.”
