A few days earlier, he had collected his 1,000th career hit – fittingly also a homer – making it a milestone week for the Japanese sensation. Locked in on offense and also back on the mound from time to time, Ohtani seems to be in the driver’s seat for another MVP trophy as the Dodgers look to finish strong and set up their World Series defense in October.

“Big Dumper” became the first player to 45 home runs this season, helping the Mariners sweep a crucial weekend series in the process. The blast marked another milestone in his historic season – Raleigh tied Hall of Famer Johnny Bench for the second-most homers by a catcher in a single campaign. Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns already had a crowded quarterback competition, and Sanders’ electric debut in the preseason may have further muddied the waters. As a fifth-round selection, Sanders felt like an odd man out against two veterans and a higher draft pick, but the second-generation standout’s progress seemed undeniable after his debut – though the rookie still wants more. “Did I play up to par?” Sanders asked after throwing a pair of touchdowns. “No, I don’t feel like I did.”

Cam Ward

Ward played two drives in his preseason debut, connecting on 5 of 8 passes for 67 yards. He looked comfortable on the NFL stage, even leading a 75-yard touchdown drive. Afterward, the No. 1 overall draft pick drew high, but simple, praise from his head coach. “Cam certainly hasn’t arrived yet,” said Titans head man Brian Callahan.

Jose Altuve

Altuve became the 11th second baseman in major-league history to reach 250 career home runs with a big blast at Yankee Stadium on August 10. He joins several Hall of Famers and becomes only the second active player with at least 250 homers and 250 steals (also Jose Ramirez). “I think playing this game for 14 years now, to be able to stay that many years and to hit homers and do stuff like that is cool,” Altuve said. “That makes me keep going and that motivates me to keep helping the team.”

Matt Shaw

Shaw has blasted seven home runs since the All-Star break, giving the Cubs another promising young bat in their lineup and baseball collectors another top rookie card to chase in 2024 products. “We should all be really proud of what Matt’s done this year,” said manager Craig Counsell, “in terms of being kind of hit in the face with the big leagues and how tough it is and how tough it is to be a hitter in this league – and to survive it.”

A’ja Wilson

The three-time WNBA MVP is making a strong case for another trophy. Through 28 games, Wilson is averaging 22.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. She scored 32 points and pulled down 20 boards in a recent win over the Connecticut Suns, making her the first player in league history with a 30-point, 20-rebound double-double. “It’s just A’ja being A’ja,” said Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon.

Jackson Blake

A second-generation star, Blake broke out as a rookie last season, and the Carolina Hurricanes recently rewarded him with an eight-year contract. The franchise has watched him develop since selecting him in the fourth round in 2021, and coaches and executives have loved what they’ve seen. “Every step, he has made (it) look easy,” said GM Eric Tulsky. “And it’s because he is such a professional and works so hard. Last summer, he was one of the players setting the pace for our group. It’s easy to make bets on someone like that.”

Jonathan Lekkerimäki

Lekkerimäki enjoyed a brief stint with the Vancouver Canucks last season, and the touted 21-year-old right winger has collectors, fans, and pundits excited about the future. “He has the skill and hockey I.Q.,” said Landon Ferraro, a former NHL player turned analyst. “Even in Vancouver, he made the right decisions. It’s just about getting in there a little bit more.” He has only appeared in 24 games, making him still eligible for the Calder Trophy in 2025-26.
