Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – October 16, 2023
Welcome to another edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take quick and fun look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards. It’s been a while but hopefully we can get it going weekly once again.
Baseball is getting deep into its postseason and it’s a mix of familiar and fresh faces bringing the drama. Bryce Harper has had no shortage of big moments in the past. He’s one of the most clutch players active today whose personality brings even more flair. Harper came through again and is a major reason why the Phillies are in the NLCS and collectors are digging out his cards once again.
He’ll be facing off against a young core of Arizona players that include Corbin Carroll. The outfielder had a stellar season with the Diamondbacks, hitting 25 home runs and stealing 54 bases. Playing in the desert out west, Carroll and his teammates don’t get a lot of national exposure. That’s about to change.
In the American League, it’s an all-Texas affair with a trip to the World Series on the line. The Rangers are the fresh faces. While they have some big names like Max Scherzer and Corey Seager on the roster, it’s Evan Carter who has been the postseason hobby standout for the team.
And then there’s Houston. Despite their winning ways, Yordan Alvarez still seems overlooked in the hobby. How many home runs will it take for more to notice?
2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey is out this week. One name you won’t find on the checklist is Connor Bedard. The first overall pick just made his debut, which means his Young Guns RC will likely be in Series 2. Although he has several junior league and Team Canada cards, it’ll be a bit of a wait for in-pack NHL cards. Topps does have a pair of Topps Now stickers currently up on their website for his debut and first goal.
I buy Tua cards every week. His prices have gone way up. It’s incredible that he isn’t on this list.
