Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – May 28, 2022
Welcome to a long weekend edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a fun and quick look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports cards and sports.
Both basketball and hockey are getting close to their respective finals. And while it has meant some momentum for upstart names like Jordan Poole, it has been the superstar veterans in both sports that have really taken control.
Connor McDavid has the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL’s Western Conference Final. The way he and the team are playing right now, it’s hard not to compare them to the Gretzky-led teams of the ’80s. McDavid is tied with teammate Leon Draisaitl for the playoff scoring lead with 26 points in just 12 games. Their linemate, Evander Kane, has 12 goals. Needless to say, they’re clicking together at just the right time.
Over in the East, there’s a very familiar name. Tampa Bay is still very much alive as they vie to three-peat as Stanley Cup champions. While the dynasty whispers are pretty quiet in hobby circles, it’s getting harder to ignore their goalie, Andrei Vasilevskiy. His cards have grow tremendously in the past couple of years, but eight more wins could get them more into the mainstream.
Should it be a surprise that the Golden State Warriors are in the NBA Finals once again. Their records in the past couple of years would suggest that. But they weren’t exactly healthy. Now they are, they’re clicking and all eyes are on Stephen Curry once again.
