Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – June 18, 2022
Welcome to another edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a fun and quick look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports cards and sports.
New Releases
The past couple of weeks have seen some heavy-hitter products arrive including 2022 Topps Series 2 Baseball, 2021 Panini Prizm Football and 2021-22 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey. This past week was the first full week for Topps Series 2, entering the Hot/Cold list at #1. Although it doesn’t carry the mystique of Series 1, it’s still a continuation of baseball’s biggest line. That means a base set that a lot of collectors dig into, more Rookie Cards and lots of inserts and parallels. Variations are back as well with the usual mix of Short Prints and Super Short Prints. Some Ultra Short Prints are starting to show up as well that put mascot heads on players’ bodies.
Championship Runs
With the Golden State Warriors winning the NBA Championship, Stephen Curry cards have gotten yet another boost in interest. This time it feels a little different, though. He’s long since established his place among the game’s greats. Now the discussion turns to just how high up on that list he goes.
With Colorado and Tampa duking it out for the Stanley Cup, look for interest to grow in their top players as well. For Colorado, it’s Nathan MacKinnon at the moment. He’s long been one of the best players in the league and now he’s got a chance to raise that profile further. But first the Avalanche have to stop the Lightning fro three-peating. Tampa might not be the biggest hockey hotbed as far as the hobby goes, but they’re entering dynasty territory, which should mean big things short- and long-term for longtime stars like Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos and Andrei Vasilevskiy.
