Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – June 12, 2023
Welcome to an almost-but-not-quite summer edition Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a quick and fun look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards.
Usually when one of Topps’ flagship baseball releases arrives, it’s the talk of the hobby. However, this past week saw the arrival of Elly De La Cruz, a much heralded prospect who had been tearing it up in the minors already. Elly is delivering some early electricity in Cincinnati, hitting .364 with a home run, four RBI and three stolen bases in his first seven games. And that first MLB homer? It soared 458 feet.
He’s not the only rookie doing big things last week. Arizona’s Corbin Carroll entered the season on many radars. The 16th pick in the 2019 draft, Carroll has smash four homers and driven in nine in his last seven games. He’s also showing prowess on the base paths, swiping three in the same span.
Since arriving last Wednesday, 2023 Topps Series 2 Baseball has been the big product in the hobby. Unlike last year, the checklist includes some notable Opening Day debuts in the base set and not as short prints. This includes Anthony Volpe, Jordan Walker and Masataka Yoshida. Largely a continuation of Series 1, there are also lots of returning inserts, parallels and the Golden Mirror Variations.
