Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – January 7, 2023
Happy new year! Welcome to the first Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold of 2023 where we take a quick look and what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards.
2022 Bowman Draft Baseball continues to be a major driver among new releases. It’s been out a couple of weeks now, but this is a long-term play as it’ll be a couple of years before the big prospects start to show up in the majors. It was also one of a half-dozen Bowman-branded baseball products to release in December (and 2022 Bowman Chrome came out on November 23). This has made for a crowded pool of prospect cards all at once, but it also gives collectors a chance to get in at several levels.
Another recent release making waves is 2022 Panini Mosaic Football. As usual, there’s it’s different spin on chrome as well as a big mix of inserts including some boldly designed short prints.
Brock Purdy continues to make strides on the field and in the hobby. One of the more surprising rookie breakouts in a while, the 49ers quarterback is adding some intrigue to a 2022 football card season that has been largely quiet thus far. No matter what happens in the postseason, a different kind of intrigue will take over in the months ahead as San Francisco has some decisions to make between Purdy and Trey Lance. So while Purdy has been playing very well, there is an added level of risk as prices continue to rise.
The likely first overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Connor Bedard, helped Canada to another gold medal at the World Junior Championships. He racked up nine goals and 23 points in just seven games in the tournament. The 17-year-old also has 27 goals and 64 points in 28 games so far this season for the WHL’s Regina Pats. Bedard has several cards already, primarily from Upper Deck’s Team Canada and minor league sets.
