Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – February 4, 2023
Welcome to Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a quick look and what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards.
This week, the top of the list is largely about anticipating what’s on the horizon. We’re a week away from the Super Bowl so, of course, the two quarterbacks facing off in Arizona are generating lots of interest. You’ve got Patrick Mahomes who is established as one of the biggest football players in hobby history going after his second ring. Then there’s Jalen Hurts, the young gun and face of a balanced Philadelphia Eagles team. He doesn’t have the same history or hype, but his cards are also much more accessible than Mahomes’. One week from Sunday, one will be attached to history.
The NBA is about to get a new all-time leading scorer. Heading into Saturday, LeBron James trailed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar by just 62 points. So, likely some time in the next week the record is going to fall. James is already one of basketball’s greats. Where he is on the podium will forever be up for debate but this latest notch will most certainly be used as a part of said discussions.
After a late delay, 2022 Topps Gilded Collection Baseball finally arrived this week. Although it comes with a high price tag, many seem intrigued by its plentiful Hall of Fame autographs. Yet another take on Topps Chrome, it also offers some solid odds of landing Superfractors compared to products with significantly higher print runs.
