Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – February 11, 2023
Welcome to a Super Bowl edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold. So grab those snacks and and keep the cold cuts handy as we take a quick look and what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards.
Basketball has a new scoring king and his name is very familiar in hobby circles. It just so happens that LeBron James has some new teammates as well, opening up the possibility that the Lakers season might turn around. Might. With James overtaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, it put James (and his cards) back in the spotlight. It’s one of those prestigious records that adds another layer to his overall body of work and legacy.
The other big news of the week is, of course, Super Bowl LVII. When it comes to football cards, most of the attention is going towards quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. But there are other players from both Kansas City and Philadelphia to keep an eye on like Travis Kelce and A.J. Brown. Whichever team wins, key players are bound to get, at the very least, a short term bump.
2022 Topps Gilded Collection Baseball continues to perform well. Since its release a couple of weeks ago, boxes have jumped from around $400 up to closer to $700. The solid checklist and low print runs throughout may have caught some off guard.
This coming week gives us what will likely be the biggest release of the year, 2023 Topps Series 1 Baseball. Don’t be surprised to see it top the next Hot/Cold.
