Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – December 8, 2023
Welcome to another edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take quick and fun look at what’s and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards. We also don’t know where Shohei Ohtani is signed or his airline itineraries. Sorry to disappoint.
The players seem to like it. Fans may still be a little uncertain on it (or confused). But the NBA’s first In-Season Tournament Finals are about to go down. LeBron James and the Lakers may be a bit of a surprise, but there’s just too many big names on their roster to shake things up. The Indiana Pacers, though? That’s a different story. Tyrese Haliburton garnered some hobby attention during his rookie campaign but things are hitting differently now. The guard is proving to be among the NBA’s elite so far this season, helping Indiana make it Las Vegas and the finals. Will it mean much in a few weeks? To most, probably not. In the meantime, Haliburton’s place among collectors is on a fast rise.
This week saw a big baseball move with the Yankees landing Juan Soto. One of the game’s most exciting players is now playing on one of the biggest stages in all of sports — for at least a year anyways. The combination of the Yankees enormous fanbase and expectations for Soto playing alongside Aaron Judge brought his cards to the forefront, at least until Shohei Ohtani picks where to sign. Soto’s Washington cards should hold well given his World Series with the team and the fact that they cover his rookies. For those looking for deals, San Diego autographs could prove to be the place as the youngster never had much time to shine with the team.
