Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – August 6, 2022
Welcome to a hot summer edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a fun and quick look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports cards and sports. We’re back after a one-week layoff due to the National. But now that it’s over, things are returning to normalcy once again.
Before we dive in, a reminder that today is 2022 Topps International Trading Card Day. Head out to a participating shop and you can get free exclusive packs of baseball cards, soccer cards or even Garbage Pail Kids.
On the field, Aaron Judge continues put up huge numbers. He’s up to 43 home runs on the season with five of those coming in his last seven games. It’s possible he could top 100 RBI within the next week or so. More than that, he’s had several big moments at key points, making those numbers seem even bigger.
While Judge’s star power has risen to new heights this year, he’s been one of the biggest names in baseball since his record-breaking 2017 rookie season. If you want to look at breakouts this year, Atlanta’s Austin Riley is at the top of the list. Yes, he’s played well for the reigning World Series champions over the past couple of year including reaching the 30 home run and 100 RBI marks last year. This year, he’s proving it was no fluke. This week, the Braves rewarded him with a 10-year extension.
