Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – August 27, 2022
Welcome to another Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a fun and quick look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports cards and sports.
Julio Rodriguez is going to be in Seattle for a very long time. The rookie continues to generate lots of buzz, not just in the Pacific Northwest but in all of baseball. It was an eventful week for the centerfielder as he joined the 20-20 Club for reaching both the 20 home run and 20 stolen bases milestones. In doing so in 107 games, he did it faster than Mike Trout who took 112 games. On Friday night, the Mariners announced that Rodriguez signed a massive contract extension that will keep him in Seattle for at least 12 years and potentially through 2039.
From rookies to pending retirements, 42-year-old Albert Pujols is in the midst of one of the hottest streaks of his career. Over his last 15 games, he’s batted .465 with seven home runs and 14 RBI. This week he inched closer to 700 Home Run Club membership, bringing his career total up to 693. Who knows how long this current streak will last but it sure is fun to watch.
Just as the 2022 NFL season is about to kick off, this week gave us the arrival of one of the last 2021 blockbusters in the form of 2021 Select Football. The product delivers its usual mix of chrome and color. The tiered structure of the base set expands rainbows even further with key players having multiple cards to draw from. Collectors seem to be appreciating the 2021 rookie class as well as there is some uncertainty as to how this year’s crop will play out, at least at key offensive positions that drive football cards as a whole.
