Welcome to another edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take quick and fun look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards.

In sports, there are hot stretches and then there’s whatever Julio Rodríguez did last week. In a four-game stretch between August 13 and 16 the Seattle centerfielder got 17 hits. For the month, he’s already at 35 and there’s still 10 days to go. Following his spectacular rookie season, Rodríguez had been in the midst of a somewhat disappointing sophomore season. Now, not only is he hot but the Mariners are coming on strong in the standings just in time for a postseason push.

Shohei Ohtani is back tied for the MLB lead in home runs. As far as MVP locks go, there hasn’t been anything closer in some time. With the Angels quickly falling out of playoff contention, look for the hot stove to heat up with where the pending free agent might end up in 2024.

The Women’s World Cup is over and Spain are the champs. That certainly wasn’t the outcome collectors stateside were hoping for. Aitana Bonmatí took home the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s top player. She has several cards thanks to Topps’ UEFA deal that covers the Women’s Champions League.

1). If the hobby is to survive, why doesn’t all the major card and comic graders come together and create a bonifide marketing index like the NYSE/NASDAQ/S&P/Russell 2000, each grader’s index of graded cards could be a highlighted link beneath the current price (with interval pricing too). This could the stock market for cards and collectors, and they should lobby for it to appear regularly in the Wall Street Journal and every major newspaper worldwide. This is a legitimate need because billions of dollars are constantly invested in this hobby, I also think the manufacturers should push for this too ,it would give them a wider audience and sell more of their products as well. It’s time to truly certify the collector market! They’ve done it with the new virtual art market index, so it why not for us that’s into comics and cards!!?!!
2). I need some help with this… in 2021 I purchased a lebron james rookie card that looks identical to the 1986 Fleer Jordan #57, I double checked and it is a legit card, it’s not a knock off, it is an extremely rare limited promo card that was produced specifically for the Cleveland Cavaliers draft day event , a hobby shop says that due to the extremely rareness of this card it could possibly be worth a couple million dollars, this is what the back says beneath a basketball with the Cavaliers logo: “#63000 LeBron James- James played basketball for St.Vincent-St.Mary High Schooling his hometown of Akron, Ohio, where he was heavily touted by the national media as a future NBA superstar. A prep-to-pro, he was selected by Cleveland with the first overall pick of the 2003 NBA draft.” The card has no manufacturing date nor a manufacturer. The card is perfectly centered with perfect corners, it’ll definitely grade a PSA 10/BGS 10. I buy a lot from eBay and I have never seen another one of these cards on the market, so it’s obvious that the few who have them value them more then even their Jordan rookie #57 card, maybe years from now after James has retired this extremely rare card will surface and set a new auction high!
