Beckett 20 Questions on … the ‘other’ sports
We all know that the collecting world has changed immensely in the last 20 years with explosive growth and massive shrinkage for the mainstay types of sports — baseball, football, basketball and hockey — at varying times as card companies came and went and as labor strife took its toll on fans’ heartstrings.
But, at the same time, one could argue that the “other” sports out there have seen plenty of growth, too, as more and more sports — and some sort-of sports — have made their appearances on cards. You may not find them in every shop or every card aisle at retail every day, but they are out there and they have their passionate collecting bases that keep those products coming back year after year.
In the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we’ll take a look at those sports that don’t normally get as much attention — racing, MMA, soccer, boxing, Olympic sports, wrestling, tennis, rodeo and more. Here are 20 questions that we hope you’ll take the time to answer to appear in this next issue.

I would like to see cards of Monster Supercross motorcycle riders and X-Games motorcycle riders. Also just about any other motorcycle racing as well (moto gp, superbikes, etc…) More variety of WWE cards similar to what Tristar does with TNA wrestling.
I don’t collect anything other than baseball, but that’s just because the only sport I really like is baseball. Another resason why is because it can get expensive. I would rather have a quality baseball card collection then mounds of everything that isn’t worth much.
We need more NASCAR Pricing … … …
I love collecting sets of all kind of sports … I’m an avid tennis card, CFL card, roller derby and soccer card collector, and even have sets of cards for lacrosse, jai alai, Iditarod, bowling, many Olympic sets, etc. – even Australian Football League cards.
My top non-traditional card passion is tennis cards, and I’m always amazed at how it’s still possible to buy cards 80-100 years old (in surprisingly great condition) of legendary players for just a few dollars each.
As a hockey card collector, I went O-Pee-Chee all the way, with complete OPC sets dating back to 1975-76 and everything since (even the God-awful Upper Deck produced sets of recent years). I always loved OPC baseball too, and have been working on OPC Red Sox team sets.
I am a Nascard Junkie. I am a Ryan Newman Super collector and have a ton of his cards…. I would say close to 75%. I also collect Dale Jr and my son collects Danica. I would love to see a bigger Racing section and more Racing card related articles. There are alot of super collectors out there and our collections would rival many of the stick and ball sports collections. Keep up the great work Beckett and more more more Racing.

I would love to see a sub-set/insert set of the “Best of the Rest” composed of popular sports from around the world (ie. Jai alai, Cricket, Badminton, Rugby etc.). On-card autograph’s and memorabilia would be an awesome bonus.
I’d like to see more moto racing cards (enduro/cross/superbike) and more euro auto racing cards (F1,WRC,etc..).
So, I know there are already some rodeo cards, but there hasn’t been a set in a few years and even then it was only for one type of rodeo – PBR (professional bull riders). I doubt Press Pass made very much money on it, but it was nice to see them make an attempt. I think if they could obtain a PRCA license and work with both past and present stars, they would see a slight rise in popularity. Maybe make the “chase” cards Jim Shoulders and/or Lane Frost.
Also, I would think that, with Women’s Professional Soccer leagues folding every three or so years and then restarting, having a corresponding set of cards with traditional mem/autos would be a great way to get the names of the players and the teams to more people. The American national team is gaining popularity on cardboard (Morgan and Solo) and no better time than corresponding to the formation of a new league to try out a new type of product.
Need more of the auto racing sets listed and corrections to the sets that have errors in them
I would like to see more PBR cards.
I have never seen them, but I would like to see Billiard’s Trading cards. You know the “The Miz”, Jeanette Lee, Allison Fisher, etc…..
Kris: American Pie and Americana are non-sports brands that do include athletes from time to time — but are largely non-sports.
Many sports have had individuals included from time to time in other sets. However, the questioning here is more for entire product lines.
i would like to see more cards of womens softball. every little girl i know plays softball and loves to look up to the pro and college players. more cards of these ladies would be a HUGE boost to younger female collectors. my son used to get si for kids and any time there was a softball player in the “cards” they gave away my little niece went nuts for it. there were only 1 or 2 a year and i know she would of loved a lot more.
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I believe Women’s Beach Volleyball cards would probably be a pretty nice seller.
Personally though, I would love to see more professional wrestling cards being made.
Nascar needs more exposure and CORRECT pricing. Many RU and Autographed cards listed in the annual Beckett racing do not even get close to the values they are listed at. Do some reseach and come up with the correct prices, people
I would like to see Rugby cards. I know its a relatively obscure sport in the US, but it is one of the most popular sports around the world. Also it is coming back to the Olympics, in which the US is the defending 2 type gold medalists.
I believe they should make some more indycar cards. I’d buy a lot because most drivers love to sign and you could have a pretty good product. NASCAR is good with press pass I think panini or press pass could make a pretty nice set although better than dirge house previosuly did.
Even in an unfortunate losing effort, it was obvious that Greg McElroy is a big step-up from Loser Sanchez.
I wish someone would do WNBA cards again
I have been collecting NASCAR trading cards for several years. I think I probably have a few thousand cards in my collection, including about 20 or so hits. Would not mind seeing other racing series make trading cards, maybe IndyCar.
