Four games, four home runs, 16 RBI and a .467 batting average.

Those were the kinds of stats Texas Rangers fans had hoped for a few years ago out of now-Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, who became just the fourth player in Major League Baseball history to open a season with a home run in his first four games.

The others before Friday? Willie Mays, Mark McGwire, Nelson Cruz. Not bad company.

Chris Davis: Are you buying?

Davis, who has 80 career home runs in 439 games spread over six seasons as a big-leaguer, appears on 360 baseball cards in the Beckett database (click here for a checklist and OPG) valued at just $1,053 not including rarities. His power surge has resulted in a few higher-priced sales in online auctions but few of more than $100. By and large he’s not as in-demand as other players might be, despite his performance.

Take our poll and tell us in the comments below whether you’re sinking your hobby dollars into Davis. Why or why not?

    No. Tuffy was a great comparison, but I do think this guy has 40 HR power. Like Rob Deer. So yeah… no.

    He’ll hit 45-50 HR’s, AND strikeout 200 times. Pass.

    Not yet.. We’ll see what happens next month.. I hope he keeps it up, it’s good to see the Orioles winning again.

    I forgot to mention … his defense is so good, he’s worth the 200 K’s a year (that will occur if he plays the whole season).

    {But I’m not quite ready to slab his RC}

    For our younger readers who might not have been alive to know about Tuffy Rhodes hot start, I’d source Chris Shelton’s first month of the 2006 season as well.

    Trey hits it right on the head.
    I stupidly held onto my Chris Shelton cards rather than dump them when people were paying Pujols+
    money for them. Doh!
