A TCG First Look at Magic: The Gathering The Hobbit

The early wave of legends leans hard into the story, and there is a clear pitch here for Commander players.

Leading the mythics is Smaug the Magnificent, a red dragon who looks right at home in any Treasure focused build.

Bilbo shows up more than once, including Bilbo, Thief in the Night, which reads like a proper build around commander rather than a flavor filler.

Gollum, Riddle Master and a couple of takes on Thorin round out the fan-favorite roster.

The one I keep circling back to is Thranduil, the Elvenking, a new Sultai elf commander who specifically cares about legendary elves.

If you have been slowly gathering the black/green elves from years past and the green/blue elves from the last Middle earth set, Thranduil is the glue that ties them together.

Over in Azorius, Bard, King of Dale doubles your card draw and your tokens at the same time, which is exactly the kind of engine that ends up on a lot of tables.

New Tricks and Old Favorites

Adventure, the beloved mechanic that first showed up on the fairy tale plane of Eldraine, is back and appears throughout the set.

It is a natural fit for a story built around a journey, letting a single card pull double duty as both a spell and a creature.

There are some returns worth noting too. Amass gets a new twist with Amass Goblins, making goblins the fourth Army creature type after zombies, orcs, and slivers.

Because amass stacks those types together, your Goblin Army can pile onto whatever other army you already have going.

Ferocious also returns as a set mechanic for the first time since the Khans of Tarkir block, this time anchoring a black/green warg and wolf theme.

Wizards layers in a few brand-new mechanics on top of that, so keep an eye on the daily previews as the exact rules get nailed down.

The Reprints Collectors Are Watching

The biggest story for collectors is that The One Ring is being reprinted, arriving as a box topper with brand new artwork.

The original printing became one of the most sought-after cards of the modern era, so a fresh version is a genuine event, and it is worth watching how it shakes out for players who missed it the first time around.

Commander staples Sauron, the Dark Lord and Tom Bombadil are also confirmed as box toppers, joining a slot stocked with cards that first debuted in the previous Middle Earth set.

The main set brings back Wood Elves, while Arcane Signet returns as a Collector Booster exclusive.

Speaking of Collector Boosters, one of my favorite touches is a run of five reprints presented entirely in Dwarvish language lettering, including an Alpha era reprint of Dwarven Warriors alongside The Reaver Cleaver, Mox Amber, Treasure Vault, and Arcane Signet.

There is even a gold treatment Smaug limited to a reported 500 or so copies for the folks chasing the top of the rarity ladder.

What Is (and Isn’t) in the Boxes

Here is the one that surprised me, and it is a real change from what we have seen all year. The Hobbit is shipping without traditional Commander precons. After the four deck lineups we got from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel Super Heroes, that is a noticeable shift.

Wizards has a cooperative Battle of the Five Armies co-op kit in the works to scratch that group’s play itch, but it is a separate product slated for 2027, so it will not be on shelves alongside the set this August.

You can expect the usual Play Boosters and Collector Boosters, Bundles, and prerelease kits.

Two Scene Boxes make the trip as well, one themed around the dwarves’ unexpected party at Bag End and one built around Smaug and his hoard. Plus, there is a set of themed Welcome Decks aimed at newer players looking for an easy on ramp into the adventure.
