$3.1 Million 2000 Playoff Contenders Tom Brady Autograph Sets Football Card Record
It’s not even football season and Tom Brady is still breaking records. A 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket Tom Brady Autograph set the record for the highest price ever paid for a football card, selling for $3,107,032 over the weekend as a part of Lelands’ Mid-Spring Classic 2021 auction.
This is the third time a copy of the card has set the record this year. In March, a BGS 8 copy sold for $1.32 million. It was also the first time a football card crossed the $1 million threshold. The following month, a BGS 8.5 copy went for $2.25 million in another Lelands sale. Although not a record, a second BGS 8.5 copy hit $1.68 million through Goldin Auctions.
The new record holding 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket Tom Brady autograph is graded mint BGS 9 with subgrades of 9.5 for centering, 9 for edges and centering, and 8.5 for corners. The autograph has a grade of 10. It’s one of seven cards to have a BGS 9 grade with none higher.
A parallel to Brady’s most valuable Rookie Card, this particular card is serial numbered 008/100.
A massive amount of Tom Brady rookie-year cards and memorabilia were also part of the Lelands sale.
The football from his first career touchdown pass went for $428,842. The ball, which has been photo-matched, was thrown to Terry Glenn on October 14, 2001.
Other top card sales included a BGS 9.5 2000 Bowman Chrome Refractor for $123,484, another graded a PSA 9 for $72,983 and a BGS 8.5 2000 Playoff Contenders Round Numbers Gold dual autograph with Brady and Marc Bulger at $41,477.
