2018 Topps Heritage Baseball variations come in several forms. It’s the Heritage way. Like past years, some of the short print versions shouldn’t be too hard to find. Others? Well, some of the 2018 Topps Heritage variations are extremely scarce.

All told, there are more than 100 different 2018 Topps Heritage Baseball variations. These cover things like different images, slight style changes, typos and other stealth errors.

And then there’s the Shoehei Othani Action Variation, his first pack-inserted MLB card.

2018 Topps Heritage Baseball Variations: An Overview

2018 Topps Heritage Baseball variation short prints and super short prints offer alternative versions of base cards. Some styles are running themes the brand has used in the past. Others are nods to 1969 Topps Baseball, the inspiration for the release. Others still are new creations.

Topps announced new Nickname Variations shortly before the set came out. These come with the name from the back of their Players Weekend jersey.

2018 Topps Heritage Baseball‘s homages 1969 go beyond basic designs. It looks back at the stars of the era. It’s also a deep dive into some of the original set’s quirks and mistakes.

2018 Topps Heritage Action Image Variations

1969 Topps Baseball isn’t exactly “action” when it comes to its photography choices. Like other sets from the era, it’s Portrait City. Neck-up close-ups, batting stance, pitching stride–they were all fair game.

Because 2018 Topps Heritage Baseball mimics the original set, the base set takes a similar portrait approach.

Enter the Action Image Variations. For veterans, these swap out the regular photos for an in-game shot.

Action Image Variations also fold in some rookies. These don’t swap out the images. Rather, they give the young standout a card of their own. Base Rookie Cards are multi-player cards, another nod to 1969 Topps. The variations make select rookies more like the rest of the cards in the set, giving collectors a rarer solo shot.

Among the rookies with a 2018 Topps Heritage Action Image Variation is Shohei Ohtani. A late addition to the release, he’s not on the main base set checklist. While there was going to be no shortage of interest in any of his cards, this should raise interest even further given its variation short print status.

There are a total of 25 Action Image Variations. Of these, the solo rookies are Ohtani, Amed Rosario, Clint Frazier, Rafael Devers, Rhys Hoskins and Victor Robles.

These are all exclusive to hobby packs. At 1:35 packs, not every hobby box will have one but they won’t be super rare, either.

2018 Topps Heritage Throwback Variations

Heritage is one of those sets that revels in the past. Throwback Variations take it in another direction. Not a direct nod to the close of the ’60s, these are another version of photo swaps. Simply, players are in retro jerseys from yesteryear.

2018 Topps Heritage Throwback Variations Mike Trout

Like past years, Throwback Variations are extremely scarce and, as a result, will likely follow suit and be some of the most coveted cards in the product. Big-time master set builders help fuel a lot of the interest.

2018 Topps Heritage Throwback Variations land 1:6,573 hobby packs.

Team Name Color Swap Variations

Team Name Color Swap Variations are more subtle than the Action Image Variations, but they still aren’t too hard to spot.

For the Team Name Color Swap Variations, look for a different color. Instead of the usual yellow, the team name is in white.

Like Action Image cards, 2018 Topps Heritage Team Name Color Swap Variations are hobby-exclusives and land 1:205 packs.

Nickname Variations

2018 Topps Heritage Nickname Variations are new to the line. They aren’t a nod to the 1969 but rather something different — Players Weekend.

To spot these, look where the team name usually is on the bottom front of the card. Instead, you’ll find the player’s nickname that they had on the back of their Players Weekend jersey.

2018 Topps Heritage Nickname Variations 151 Manny Machado

According to Topps, Heritage Nickname Variations are rare but no specific odds have been announced.

Traded Variations

It’s believed that tough Traded versions are among the 2018 Topps Heritage variations. These note the transaction that brought the player to their respective team. To find this note, look to the vital stats on the back.

Errors

Rookie Cup

If you pull a card of a player with the Rookie Cup trophy on the front, check the year. Some are error variations that say 1969 instead of the normal 2017 that’s on base cards.

Player Name Color

Among the most valuable cards in 1969 Topps Baseball are White Letter Variations. As the name suggests, these reflect a color different. Here’s it’s the name on the front where the last name is in white instead of yellow.

It’s not exactly the case here. It appears that 2018 Topps Heritage Player Name Color Error Variations have the player’s last name in a different color on the front.

The “Batboy”

Yeah, that’s not Mike Trout. Who is it? That’s a good question. The answer is likely from another Angels card in the 1969 set — Aurelio Rodriguez. It turns out the photo is of the team’s batboy, Leonard Garcia. The mistake was not found until years later.

Errors But Not Variations

2018 Topps Heritage Baseball has at least a couple of error cards. However, they don’t appear to have corrected versions so they’re not variations.

The first comes at the beginning of the checklist with card one. On the front it pictures Hanley Ramirez. It should have been Jose Ramirez, who is list correctly on the back.

Jose Reyes, card #246, is missing his full career stats.

If you get one of these or see some listed for high prices, don’t get too excited beyond the card itself. Usually, unintentional errors like this don’t get corrected anymore.

2018 Topps Heritage Variations: The Codes

The code method does work to identify 2018 Topps Heritage Baseball variations. Although meant for production and not collecting purposes, the fine print on the back identifies different types of cards. This can be handy to quickly identify 1) that you have a variation and 2) what category it falls under.

To do this, look on the back of the card. If the code sequence at the end of the fine print ends in 65, you’ve got a regular base card. If it ends in 85, then it’s one of the high-number short prints (#401-500 on the main checklist).

These are the code endings for the 2018 Topps Heritage variations:

Error – 98
Traded – 99
Throwback – 00
Action Image – 01
Team Name Color Swap – 02
Rookie Cup Error – 03
Nickname – 04

Here’s my question … if the Ohtani is numbered only as 17, doesn’t that violate the whole rookie card/logo thing because technically it’s not an insert (or at least labeled as such on the back of the card)?

  2. Fred 1 March, 2018 at 09:29

Amazing how all of these “errors” and “variations” only happen to the most sought after stars and rookies of the day. Nothing ever goes wrong with the Aurelio Rodriguez’s and Ron Perranoski’s in today’s sets. Pretty suspect if you ask me.

    • Ryan Cracknell 1 March, 2018 at 09:43

@Fred — All of these variations and errors are intentional. Most view them essentially as inserts. So to that end, the player selection is deliberate.

  3. Robert Belenzon 1 March, 2018 at 19:21

    Hi Ryan
Found what appears to me, as an error that won’t be corrected ..102 Edwin Diaz fact says his slider tied him for fourth in Saves in the National League. Which could be true, but Seattle’s in the AL.
    LOL Bob

  4. taylor briley 3 March, 2018 at 23:40

I have a card number 400 Carlos Gomez and he is in a left handed batting stance and he is a right hand hitter. Could this be a error or a variation?

  5. paul hertel 5 March, 2018 at 11:15

on the player name color variation,if the base color on the player name is yellow and the variation is the player name “other colors”,does the “other” color mean white is considered a variation?

    • Ryan Cracknell 5 March, 2018 at 21:59

@paul — The only two Player Name Color cards are Kris Bryant and Aaron Judge. Both are pictured here.

  6. Kevin G 5 March, 2018 at 19:59

I just bought a box of these cards at target inside was 35 cards. My question is I got an autographed card but can’t tell if the autograph is real or not. It’s a Paul Goldschmidt card on the back it says #29 out of 30 photos. Any information on this card? Thanks in advance

  7. jeff mccain 5 March, 2018 at 21:03

I just pulled a josh bell card in a throw back uniform and cant find it any were in the listings. does anyone have any information on this card.

  8. Ryan m 6 March, 2018 at 12:16

I bought a hobby box that had one purple chrome card in every pack. Is this a hot box and what are the odds on that?

    • Ryan Cracknell 7 March, 2018 at 16:09

@Ryan – Purple Refractors are exclusive to hobby and retail hot boxes. Odds weren’t released.

  9. Rob Connington 6 March, 2018 at 14:03

I bougt a few blaster boxes and (2)of the cards do not have the Topps logo on the back like it does for most of the cards with the lowercase hanging t and the number with it. Are these errors?

  10. Tony Weir 6 March, 2018 at 15:52

I am seeing a lot of cards that look faded on the back. Is that anything? Meant to be like that?

    • Ryan Cracknell 7 March, 2018 at 16:10

@Tony — Likely just something to do with ink levels or something like that when they were printed.

  11. Kyler K 9 March, 2018 at 09:17

I found this page after pulling a Mike Trout bat boy from a pack yesterday. Really caught me off guard haha. Any idea on what the odds are of getting a card like this? I’m just curious about what a variation card like this is worth.

  12. Ricky 9 March, 2018 at 21:29

Got a Manny Machado autograph the cup had 2018, not 2017 or 1969. Is this an error or special card?

    • Ryan Cracknell 12 March, 2018 at 14:04

@Ricky — I’m not sure what cup you’re referring to. If it is an error, it’s not a variation. A corrected version isn’t out there.

  13. Mike 9 March, 2018 at 21:30

I opened a bunch of Walmart packs and got a bunch of cards with light pink backs. The color is distinctly different from the majority of the cards I pulled. Any idea what they are? Thanks

    • Ryan Cracknell 12 March, 2018 at 14:06

@Mike — Sounds more like a printing error of sorts, nothing intentional. If it was just one, maybe a Flip Stock parallel but if you got several, that’s probably not the case as they’re so rare. They’re also hobby exclusives.

  14. Dwayne Lee zboril 10 March, 2018 at 03:40

I have a very strange looking Christian yelich, the background is magenta red with a green swirl. any ideas on this one

    • Ryan Cracknell 15 March, 2018 at 16:15

@don – It’s a New Age Performers insert. The codes aren’t intended for collectors to really use, more production. But they can be a hint to tell base cards from variations. There’s nothing to them for other inserts.

  15. don 16 March, 2018 at 12:54

I picked up 5 of the 35 card Target boxes.. finding top miscuts (the whole top white border missing) in 2 to 3 cards per box,,, anyone think they maybe a purposeful error?

  16. Josh Hazen 19 March, 2018 at 21:55

Why do all-star rookie autos have 2018 written on cup while base card has 2017 on cup, Have Trey Mancini card ROA-TM with Cup on front that says Topps 2018 All-Star Rookie. Have card card 250 that says 2017 on cup, also the cup is on the right side on auto and left on base card.

    • Ryan Cracknell 13 April, 2018 at 09:40

@jason – All of his cards in Heritage are like that. It’s not a variation. The capless variations are part of Gypsy Queen.

  17. Chris 11 September, 2018 at 17:41

Why isn’t there any stats on the back of the Corey seater card #295 ? It looks like a pic of a jersey or something.

  18. Scott 12 July, 2019 at 02:59

I just opened a high series pack and received a Ohtani #600 magenta back. Print run says 10. Any idea about the cards value? Beckett says no pricing due to scarcity.

  19. Jason 2 November, 2019 at 16:09

I think I have a awesome card but need help. I have a graded PSA 10 2018 #25 TOPPS HERITAGE AARON JUDGE RC CUP ERROR CARD. THE CODE ON THE BACK DOES END IN 03. …I CAN’T SEEM TO FIND THE WORTH OF THIS CARD AS I’M PRETTY SURE AFTER YEARS OF COLETTING I HIT SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL. CAN ANYONE LET ME KNOW IF I HAVE SOMETHING AWESOME AND IT’S WORTH PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
