2022 Bowman Baseball Leads Off a New Year of Prospecting

Share:

2022 Bowman Baseball is pretty much exactly what you’d expect if you’ve been following the brand. It’s where prospects shine and veterans tag along for the ride.

Once again combining elements of Bowman and Bowman Chrome, hobby has two formats. Traditional hobby boxes come with one autograph while HTA jumbo boxes have three.

The checklist also has a handful of other insert sets, many of which come with bold designs.

2022 Bowman Baseball Checklist Overview

As usual, the main Bowman Baseball checklist has three main sections. Veterans and rookies make up the Bowman base set. However, there’s also Bowman Prospects and Bowman Chrome Prospects. Technically, they’re inserts. But let’s be honest — up-and-coming talent gets the starring role here so these two particular inserts are on similar footing as the base set, if not on a pedestal.

The standard base set has 100 cards done on standard stock. Top vets combine with rookies to fill out this part of the product.

Bowman Prospects carry a virtually identical design but have different numbering totalling 150 cards. Standard for the line, these are minor leaguers some of whom will be appearing on their first MLB cards.

Parallels for both the base set and Prospects include:

  • Sky Blue – /499
  • Neon Green – /399
  • Fuchsia – /299
  • Purple – /250
  • Blue – /150
  • Yellow – /75
  • Gold – /50
  • Orange – /25 (hobby only)
  • Red – /5
  • Platinum – 1/1
  • Printing Plates – 1/1

Usually Prospects have some additional exclusive parallels in various retail configurations as well.

Bowman Chrome Prospects feature the same 150 players only on chromium stock, something that many collectors prefer.

The rainbow, at least what’s in hobby and HTA jumbo, is made up of:

  • Refractors – /499
  • Speckle Refractors – /299
  • Purple Refractors – /250
  • Fuschia Refractors – /199
  • Fuschia Lava Refractors – /199
  • Blue Refractors – /150
  • Blue Shimmer Refractors – /150
  • Aqua Refractors – /125
  • Aqua Shimmer Refractors – /125
  • Green Mini Diamond Refractors – /99
  • Yellow Refractors – /75
  • Yellow Mini Diamond Refractors – /75
  • Gold Refractors – /50
  • Gold Shimmer Refractors – /50
  • Orange Refractors – /25 (hobby only)
  • Orange Shimmer Refractors – /25 (hobby only)
  • Red Refractors – /5
  • Red Lava Refractors – /5
  • Printing Plates – 1/1
  • Superfractors – 1/1

Like last year, select Bowman Chrome Prospects cards have Prospector’s Special Die-Cut Variations (/49), which are exclusive to hobby packs.

Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs

For many, Chrome Prospect Autographs represent the primary chase of any year of Bowman. Historically, a player’s first becomes their key card, particularly if they go on to become a superstar. Signatures are on-card and the parallels rival standard Bowman Chrome Prospect cards:

  • Refractors – /499
  • Speckle Refractors – /299
  • Purple Refractors – /250
  • Blue Refractors – /150
  • Atomic Refractors – /100
  • Yellow Refractors – /75
  • Gold Refractors – /50
  • Gold Shimmer Refractors – /50
  • Orange Refractors – /25 (hobby only)
  • Orange Shimmer Refractors – /25 (hobby only)
  • Red Refractors – /5
  • Red Lava Refractors – /5
  • Printing Plates – 1/1
  • Superfractors – 1/1

Additional Autographs

The 2022 Bowman Baseball checklist has more than just Chrome Prospect Autographs. Similar Chrome Rookie Autographs shift the spotlight to players who have made their MLB debuts — and likely have earlier Chrome autographs.

The parallel lineup here shows a little more brevity, sticking mainly to standard colors:

  • Refractors – /499
  • Blue Refractors – /150
  • Atomic Refractors – /100
  • Yellow Refractors – /75
  • Gold Refractors – /50
  • Orange Refractors – /25 (hobby only)
  • Red Refractors – /5
  • Printing Plates – 1/1
  • Superfractors – 1/1

Dual Bowman Prospects Autographs double up the number of signatures on a card. Base versions have 25 copies with additional Superfractors (1/1) also available.

The 2022 Bowman Ultimate Book Card (/10) opens up to include a lot of signatures. Topps hasn’t announced exactly how many it will be this year, but 2021’s opened up to show 24 players.

All-American Game Autographs and Bowman Buybacks are also randomly inserted in packs.

Inserts

With a checklist that celebrates the future, many of the inserts in 2022 Bowman Baseball take a similar approach in their design with big elements, bright colors or a combination of the two.

Energy and excitement are the inspiration for Virtuosic Vibrations (1:8 hobby packs).

Bowman in 3-D cards (1:18) don’t use the same lenticular stock as classic Kellogg’s cards of decades past or more recent Topps 3D Baseball sets. Rather, the design is meant to create an illusion of depth.

Another new addition is Hi-Fi Futures (1:6).

Bowman Scouts’ Top 100 (1:4) returns for another year, offering a handy ranking of top prospects in the process.

Rookie of the Year Favorites (1:8) are also back.

Each of these five insert sets have the same parallel levels: Atomic Refractors (/150), Aqua Refractors (/125), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25, hobby only), Red Refractors (/5), and Superfractors (1/1). Select cards for all except Hi-Fi Futures come with limited autographs as well.

According to Topps, 2022 Bowman Invicta (1:24) kick off a new line for the company. These have additional Atomic Refractors (/150), Gold Refractors (/50), hobby-exclusive Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5) and Superfractors (1/1). Autographs are numbered to 99 with their own Gold Atomic Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5) and Superfractors (1/1).
