2020 Topps Series 2 Baseball Cards Expand the Flagship, Pay Tribute to 1985 and Mike Trout

2020 Topps Series 2 picks up where Series 1 left off, expanding not only the base set but many of the inserts as well. That means more around the “decades” theme (including an insert dedicated to Mike Trout) and a top up on the 1985 Topps front.

Regular hobby boxes continue to offer either an autograph or relic while Series 2 hobby jumbo boxes guarantee an autograph plus two total memorabilia cards or manufactured relics.

Another 350 cards join the main 2020 Topps Baseball set. Numbering continues on from Series 1, making it 700 total cards when both are put together. Rookies and veterans make up the basic player content. Subsets include team cards and Future Stars.

Inserts

Decade’s Best, which continues from Series 1, features a series of top 10 lists highlighting top hitters, pitchers, teams and award winners from the past seven decades. Decade’s Best Chrome gives the set a shiny turn. The only way to get these is in two-card packs that act as box toppers in hobby jumbo.

Sticking to the 2010s, is Topps Player of the Decade: Mike Trout. The ten-card set looks at the accomplishments of three-time American League MVP.

New for Series 2 is WARriors of the Diamond. These 50 cards delve in WAR and dWAR leaders across several generations.

All three of these insert sets have Blue, Black (/299), Gold (/50), Red (/10) and Platinum (1/1) parallels. Autographs (/25) are available for some cards as well.

Significant Statistics uses advanced stats to spotlight top 2019 players. Parallels here are Gold (/50), Red (/10) and Platinum (1/1).

Topps 2030 looks into a crystal ball to predict who the top players might be over the next ten years. These carry a similar design to the Topps 2020 inserts found in 2010 Topps Baseball. More recently, it’s also the design from the first batch of 2020 Topps Throwback Thursday cards. Topps 2030 cards are approximately four per hobby box and one per jumbo.

1985 Topps Baseball inserts bring back the iconic 1980s design in honor of its 35th anniversary. More veterans, rookies and retired players are on the checklist, including some with an All-Star notation. Blue, Black (/299), Gold (/50), Red (/10) and Platinum (1/1) versions can also be found.

Tough sketch cards feature original art. These one-of-ones are only in hobby and hobby jumbo packs.

Autographs and Memorabilia Cards

Autographs and memorabilia cards in 2020 Topps Series 2 Baseball are a mix of stand-alone themes as well as some that spin out of standard insert sets.

1985 Topps Baseball Autographs are similar to the regular inserts not just in design but the fact that they use past and present players. Signatures for these are on-card. Parallels include Black (/199), Gold (/50 or less), hobby exclusive Red (/25) and Platinum (1/1), which are only in hobby and hobby jumbo packs. 1985 Topps Baseball Relics follow a similar theme only without signatures. Parallel levels are the same as autographs.

Another insert set to get a “hits” upgrade is Significant Statistics. These have autograph (/50 or less), relic (/99 or less) and autograph relic (/50 or less) versions.

Baseball Stars Autographs bring signatures of players from multiple eras. Besides base versions, there are Black (/199), Gold (/50), Red (/25) and Platinum (1/1) parallels. Baseball Stars Dual Autographs have no more than five copies each.

Major League Materials take an open-ended approach to game-used memorabilia cards. Basic relic parallels come in Black (/199), Gold (/50), Red (/25) and Platinum (1/1). Autograph relic versions are numbered to 50 or less.

In the Name Relics, which have letters from the backs of game-used jerseys, and Cut Signatures are all one-of-ones. That said, players on the In the Name Relics checklist may have multiple cards.

Manufactured Relics

2020 Topps Series 2 Baseball hobby packs have a pair of manufactured relics available.

Draft Day Medallion Cards look back on past picks. The product’s release is in close proximity to the 2020 MLB Draft. The checklist for these are players from recent years who have since made the majors.

Collectors can also find 50 Jumbo Special Event Jersey Sleeve Patch cards.

Both of these insert sets have Black (/50), Gold (/25), Red (/10) and Platinum (1/1) parallels as well as autographs (/10 or less) for some.

Silver Packs

The 2020 Topps Silver Packs program continues in Series 2. Regular hobby boxes come with one four-card pack inside while hobby jumbo boxes have two. Between these and the Decade’s Best Chrome cards, jumbo boxes now have three box topper bonus packs.

Cards in Silver Packs are Chrome versions of 1985 Topps Baseball inserts. Refractors and autographs are randomly inserted.

Celebration of the Decades Golden Tickets

Another 25 special golden tickets are included in 2020 Topps Series 2 Baseball packs, joining the 25 found in Series 1. These are good for an invite to a special event hosted by Topps that includes special guests. It’s dubbed the “2020 Topps Celebration of the Decades.”

I would pass out if I ever pulled my own Trout auto.

Very nice stuff, I like the draft medallion set.

I suspect those 2030 inserts will be about as accurate as the 2020 inserts from 10 years ago. That checklist is full of names like Ubaldo Jimenez that were washed out of the league before 2020 ever happened. Just goes to show that there is no such thing as a sure thing, especially 10 years down the road.
