2020 Topps Chrome Ben Baller Edition Baseball gives the main set an icy — and limited — twist. In a collaboration with the jeweller (and Topps Project 2020 artist), the product reimagines 2020 Topps Chrome Baseball with a few design twists and adding some new cards along the way.

2002 Topps Chrome Ben Baller Edition Baseball Checklist Overview

The base set consists of 200 cards. This matches the regular Topps Chrome set. The layout is close, but there are some differences. The biggest is the banner running up the side, which has been given a diamond design makeover. A little more subtle is how the player’s name has been brought together to a single line. Of course, there’s the signature Ben Baller chain to go with the Topps Chrome logo.

Like any Chrome set, there’s Refractors. Falling a combined 1:4 packs, there’s a total of six in every box. Colors and styles include:

  • Green Refractors – /99
  • Blue Refractors – /75
  • Gold Refractors – /50
  • Orange Refractors – /25
  • Red Refractors – /5
  • Superfractors – 1/1

Additional Inserts and Autographs

2020 Topps Chrome Ben Baller Edition Baseball brings back another part of Chrome (and a lot of Topps’ 2020 sets), blinging out 1985 Topps Baseball. The big difference with these are how a gem design highlights the team banner. Given that it’s the most prominent design feature from the 1985 flagship set, it’s a noticeable change.

The checklist has 25 total 1985 Topps inserts, combining to land 1:12 packs.

Additional parallels include Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5) and Superfractors (1/1).

Exclusive to Ben Baller Edition are 15 Ben’s Diamond Die Cuts, which are one per box. Like the 1985 Topps inserts, the die cuts have Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5) and Superfractors (1/1).

Autographs are a big part of the Topps Chrome line, probably second to its Refractors. Signatures are randomly inserted in Ben Baller Edition packs, although they are tough. Gold Refractors (/50) are the most common at 1:403 packs. Orange (/25) and Red Refractors (/5) as well as one-of-one Superfractors versions available at even longer odds.

The first batch of 2020 Topps Chrome Ben Baller Edition boxes were offered to Topps 582 Montgomery Club members on August 27. The following week, collectors could sign up for a raffle on the Topps website. Those drawn were given the chance to buy a box. The cost was $250 per box with a one-box limit.

Sorry, I can’t get past how there are now limited edition versions of cards adorned with gems and diamonds available at exorbitant prices for preferred customers. I spent my time (pre-pandemic) trolling around in dime and quarter bins looking for cards to build sets. I might go all the way to the dollar bins to find the Jeters or Trouts I need or to splurge on a low-count card. There is such a disparity from what I collect and the budget I have to spend on it to spending $250.00 on 96 of these cards I can’t even begin to imagine it.

    • Ryan Cracknell 28 August, 2020 at 14:30

@fred – One of the benefits of the number of products is that there is something for everyone. Everything isn’t meant for everyone. There’s nothing about “preferred customers” here, either. Montgomery Club members pay money to join. One of the benefits this year is early access to some of the online products. They were limited here to one box. The raffle system for non-members helps combat the problem with automated bots scooping everything up in seconds. Although limited in nature, it looks like Topps is actually doing everything they can to get it in as many different hands as possible.

  2. Jim Gilcher 28 August, 2020 at 11:51

thanks to TOPPS for at least randomizing the ability to get one of these. its getting old that the same buyers get all the boxes!!

  3. Adam Jensen 29 August, 2020 at 23:05

I do appreciate Topps finding a different way to randomize the opportunity to purchase. I sat online for nearly 24 hours straight to purchase one box of the Bowman Sapphire. I finally got a box (after hours of trying), put it into my cart, (which spun the wheel for at least another hour), got to the checkout, (entered my numbers), and was then directed back to the main site only to go back and click on the box one more time to be told they were sold out. I guess you could say I was a little disappointed. I understand a buyer needs to make money but let the collectors have a chance without having to pay a 400% markup minutes later on ebay.

  4. Larry 29 August, 2020 at 23:24

How limited is 3.8 million? Assuming every card in the 200 card set has a superfractor at a rate of 1 every 19200 packs.

    • Ryan Cracknell 31 August, 2020 at 11:02

@Larry – Probably depends on how you look at it. 3.8 million is a big number if you’re looking at all the cards but when you break it down to boxes and such, it’s not a massively produced product.

  5. Moz 30 August, 2020 at 02:18

This is just criminal. Tease the poor collectors with all these fancy limited items. what chance do I have when I can barely scoop a pack of cards at my local target.

  6. goblue98 31 August, 2020 at 09:26

I agree with Fred and Jim. It’s too much of a good thing in my opinion, so I personally won’t be buying any. I agree that many of the same buyers end up with it, and resell it.

  7. Chad 3 September, 2020 at 07:19

I never win anything and I was fortunate to win the opportunity to buy one of these boxes! Thanks Topps!

  8. Nick Leyland 16 September, 2020 at 08:08

With all these releases it will be interesting to see what products actually hold value over time. I feel that nostalgia has been the real driver of long-term value in sports cards and without young kids being able to afford, or get their hands on, releases like this, a lot of them might end up being flash in the pan. The market seems to be like a game of hot potato.
