2020 Bowman Chrome Baseball Puts Prospects, Penmanship on Display

2020 Bowman Chrome Baseball is kind of like the sequel to 2020 Bowman Baseball, at least when it comes to the shiny stuff. Prospects remain the primary focus on the checklist with rookies playing second. As far as card types, it’s chrome so the staples of Refractors and autographs return as well.

Boxes come in two types. Regular hobby boxes, which are done as a pair of mini boxes, have two autographs. Abbreviated HTA boxes are back as well. These have just three cards total. All have signatures, though.

2020 Bowman Chrome Baseball Base Set Basics (and Prospects)

The base set is an abbreviated 100 cards highlighting vets and rookies. All have several parallels including:

  • Refractors (/499)
  • Purple Refractors (/250)
  • Blue Refractors (/150)
  • Green Refractors (/99)
  • Gold Refractors (/50)
  • Orange Refractors (/25)
  • Red Refractors (/5)
  • Superfractors (1/1)

Select rookies also have SP Image Variations that have a different photo on the front. Parallels for these include Autographs (/25) and Autograph Superfractor (1/1).

There’s also another 100 Chrome Prospects. These carry a similar design as the base set but it’s numbered separately. Players here are a mix of youngsters coming up through the minor league ranks.

The prospect parallel rainbow is even bigger here. They have all eight of the Refractors that the base set has. There are also a handful of Shimmer versions:

  • Chrome Shimmer – 1:12 packs
  • Green Shimmer – /99
  • Gold Shimmer – /50
  • Orange Shimmer – /25
  • Red Shimmer – /10
  • Black Shimmer – 1/1

Because HTA boxes are autographs-only, the base set and Chrome Prospects are exclusive to hobby boxes.

Autographs and Memorabilia Cards

Chrome Prospect Autographs and Chrome Rookie Autographs make up the bulk of the signature content in 2020 Bowman Chrome Baseball. In addition to their regular versions, which have a similar design as the base set, there are lots of colorful parallels:

  • Refractors – /499
  • Purple Refractors – /250
  • Blue Refractors – /150
  • Green Refractors – /99
  • Gold Refractors – /50
  • Red Refractors – /5
  • Superfractors – 1/1

And that’s just for starters. Exclusives come into play here depending on what type of box you’re opening.

Orange Refractors (/25) are only in hobby boxes.

HTA boxes add six more types, but only for Chrome Prospect Autographs:

  • HTA Choice – /150
  • Green Atomic Refractors – /99
  • Gold Shimmer Refractors – /50
  • Orange Wave Refractors – /25
  • Red Wave Refractors – /5
  • Black Mojo Refractors – 1/1

Prime Chrome Signatures (/50) return. In the past, many of these have also included inscriptions. Parallels include HTA-only Orange Refractors (/25) and Superfractors (1/1).

2020 Bowman Chrome Baseball also has a new crop of All-American Game Autographs (/199).

2019 AFL Fall Stars Relics represent one of the few places on the checklist to include memorabilia. Found only in hobby packs, Orange Refractors (/25) and Superfractors (1/1) are also available. Autograph versions can also be found.

Chrome Autographed Relics have signatures beyond prospects. Base versions come numbered with additional Gold Refractor (/50), Orange Refractor (/25) and Superfractor (1/1) parallels.

Inserts

The insert lineup goes beyond the Chrome Prospects. Delving further into prospects and the journey through the minors are four other chase sets.

Dawn of Glory is a new theme. Landing approximately one per hobby box, these cards highlight players on the verge of making the majors.

Numbers are the centerpiece of Stat Tracker (1:3 hobby packs).

2019 AFL Fall Stars (1:6 hobby packs) break down some of the best participants. There’s also a short print version of MVP Royce Lewis that has 250 copies.

All three of these insert sets have Atomic Refractor (/150), Orange Refractor (/25) and Superfractor (1/1) parallels. Select cards in each also have Autographs and Superfractor Autograph (1/1). There are also additional Orange Refractor Autographs for Dawn of Glory and Stat Tracker cards.

Farm to Fame is another new insert set. Instead of prospects, these have veterans and retired greats on cards using pictures from their rookie seasons. Base versions are case hits. Additional parallels include Orange Refractors (/25), Superfractors (1/1), Autographs and Superfractor Autographs (1/1).
