2018 Panini Contenders Optic Football marks the second season Contenders gets an Opti-Chrome makeover. Besides the obvious shine, the configuration takes a more streamlined approach with just six cards per box. Two of those are autographs (including one that’s on-card).
2018 Panini Contenders Optic Football Base Set Overview
Like regular Contenders, the base set comes with a couple of different levels. Regular Season Ticket cards, which fall two per hobby box, highlight top veteran names. Parallels combine to land one per box and include Red (/199), Blue (/99), Orange (/49), Gold (/10) and Gold Vinyl (1/1).
Rookie Ticket RPS Autographs are a cornerstone of 2018 Panini Contenders Optic. These offer Rookie Cards of key members of the season’s draft class. Parallels are similar to Season Ticket cards with Red (/199), Purple (/99), Orange (/49), Blue (/25), Gold (/10) and Gold Vinyl (1/1).
Veteran Ticket Autographs (/25) maintain the general base design, adding signatures from such players as Russell Wilson and Adam Thielen. These also have one-of-one Gold Vinyl versions.
Additional Autographs
2018 Panini Contenders Optic Football reaches back in time to offer chromium versions of some of the biggest cards Contenders has ever produced. 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 Contenders Tribute Autographs all have on-card signatures. Reimaginings include ink from Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Kurt Warner and more. These are limited to ten copies each or less.
The 2000 Contenders Tribute Tom Brady autograph has three copies plus a one-of-a-kind Gold Vinyl parallel.
More signatures can be found in All-Time Contenders Autographs (/25 or less) and Player of the Year Contenders Autographs (/25 or less). These have Gold (/10) and Gold Vinyl (1/1) parallels.
Inserts
Boxes also come with one regular insert from a lineup that includes X’s and O’s, MVP Contenders, Triple Threat, and Player of the Year Contenders. Base versions for X’s and O’s and Triple Threat come numbered to 175 with Purple (/99), Orange (/49), Blue (/25), Gold (/10) and Gold Vinyl (1/1) parallels.

Having a chrome version of Contenders seems like overkill.
These cards are very sharp and the Contenders Tribute autographs are great. I’d rather see these cards as inserts in Contenders than an expensive, 6 card standalone box.
